Alan Shearer has given his say on the landmark Manchester City ruling that continues to rock the football world.
Alan Shearer has called upon the Premier League to act swiftly to punish Manchester City following their guilty verdict.
Bombshell reports emerged on Friday - revealing that City had lost their seismic case against the top flight. In an almost landslide result, the club were found guilty of 114 financial breaches between 2009 and 2018.
Football fans waited eagerly for an official announcement from the Premier League. That came yesterday - with Man City attacked for orchestrating “sham contracts” to juice up their revenue.
‘What a mess’ - Alan Shearer
Speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast, Newcastle United icon Shearer slammed the Man City situation as a “mess”. He said: “What a mess. What a complete and utter mess. I go back to what we said at the weekend. The ramifications go so far it’s unbelievable.
“Where does it stop? Where do the clubs stop? Where do the accolades stop? There’s so much at stake here for football, the Premier League and Manchester City. I look at their success. Clearly they have to wait for the sanctions to come out. If it all comes out in terms of ‘Yeah, you’re bang to rights’.
“How do they get over that? I know the fans have had their memories, but that Aguero moment is one of, if not the greatest moment in Premier League history. That’s blown apart now. That’s done. I’m not a City fan and I don’t really care, but that was one of the most iconic moments in Premier League history.”
Alan Shearer urges swift action
Shearer insisted that a punishment must come quickly to avoid jeopardising the current Premier League campaign. As it stands, Man City sit top of the table and travel to Liverpool following the international break.
“Whatever happens, it has to be done quickly,” Shearer added. “We can’t have a scenario where they’re appealing and sitting top of the league. There’s a chance they could win the league again.
“You have to also think about how many people knew. Pep leaving in the summer, stockpiling signings in the summer… I don’t know. The punishment could be huge. It could be massive.
“If they lose their appeal, I don’t think they can really complain. There’s people at other clubs who will have questions to answer. It’s a mess that needs an ending story pretty quickly for the sake of football.”
