Liverpool midfielder joins England camp as replacement for injured stars

England recovered from their opening Nations League defeat by beating the Czech Republic 2-0 in Prague on Tuesday. Anthony Gordon and captain Harry Kane scored in the second half.

Thomas Tuchel’s side had lost 3-2 to world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday.

The Czechs went down to ten men in the 25th minute, when Pavel Sulc’s yellow card for a high challenge on Elliot Anderson was upgraded to a red after a VAR review.

Gordon broke the deadlock less than two minutes after the restart, heading in a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross. Kane doubled the lead in the 69th minute, sweeping home from close range after the ball fell loose in the area.

England had 22 shots to the Czech Republic’s six and 66 per cent of possession, according to Sports Mole. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott made his senior England debut as a 70th-minute substitute.

The win lifts England to second in Group A3, three points behind Spain, and they travel to Croatia on Saturday.

Changes were also made in the England set-up at a younger age group.

Liverpool midfielder Trey Nyoni and Everton’s Harrison Armstrong have both joined the England men’s under-21 squad.

The pair replace Jobe Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United’s Lewis Miley, who have returned to their clubs.

The squad faces Slovakia at Stoke City on Friday, 2 October, they then play the Republic of Ireland at Turner’s Cross in Cork on Tuesday, 6 October.

Both matches are European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

Lee Carsley’s side won six of their first seven games in the campaign, and the Slovakia match is their final home fixture. England are aiming to reach the 2027 finals in Albania and Serbia.

Trey Nyoni and Armstrong were both in action with England’s under-20s on Tuesday. The under-20s beat France 2-1, and Armstrong replaced Nyoni in the 59th minute.

Nyoni is 19 and has represented England at every age group from under-16 to under-20.

He played in all three of Liverpool’s pre-season games on their US tour and made six Premier League appearances off the bench last season.

This season under Andoni Iraola, he has made four appearances for the first-team and started Liverpool’s Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham last month.
