Jules Kounde, the Barcelona defender, is said to be keen on joining Chelsea, as per latest transfer news. His place in Hansi Flick’s side is now under serious doubt this season.
Chelsea set to bring in Jules Kounde?
Jules Kounde came very close to signing for Chelsea back in 2022. However, Barcelona swooped in and won that race for his signature. Since arriving at Camp Nou, the French international has grown into one of the most dependable defenders in Spanish football.
However, his standing inside the Barca dressing room has shifted noticeably over the past year. Hansi Flick has started leaning more on Eric Garcia and Joao Cancelo. This pushed Kounde further down the pecking order. That change has left the defender with very limited game time in the opening weeks of this La Liga campaign. This is a huge contrast to last term when he made 47 appearances for the Catalan side across all competitions.
However, as reported by TEAMtalk, Barca have quietly signaled to his camp that a sale could be arranged in the near future. That said, a January exit is not entirely ruled out. Now, this news has already caught the eyes of several Premier League clubs.
Alonso wants Kounde at Chelsea
Chelsea have never fully let go of their long running admiration for Kounde. That interest has only grown stronger now that his future feels genuinely unsettled. New head coach Xabi Alonso is understood to want extra cover and competition at right back. He sees a player of Kounde’s experience and versatility as an ideal addition to his squad.
The Blues have also been quietly assessing the long term future of Malo Gusto. Given that, Kounde could be the one to take the place of his fellow countrymen at Stamford Bridge if a deal comes together. There remains a genuine pathway for Kounde back to west London, who has always held a soft spot for the club he nearly joined before Barcelona hijacked that move.
Meanwhile, the TEAMtalk report also adds that Liverpool and Manchester City have been credited with interest as well. That level of competition shows just how highly Kounde is still regarded across Europe, even with his reduced role domestically. For Chelsea, this feels like a chance to land a player they wanted long before he ever pulled on a Barca shirt.

Kounde’s last season is proof of his game
Despite his current struggles for regular minutes, the numbers from last season tell the story of a defender still playing near the top of his game. Kounde finished the previous campaign with 10 clean sheets and 82 clearances, alongside 49 crosses delivered. These are the numbers that few full backs in Europe could match across a similarly demanding workload.
Kounde’s 2025/26 stats at Barcelona, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Appearances Assists ChancesCreated DefensiveContributions Duels Won(%)
La Liga 30 1 23 145 54%
Copa del Rey 5 0 5 16 65%
Champions League 10 2 10 65 56%
His versatility across multiple defensive positions remains one of his biggest selling points. That is something that continues to appeal to clubs. Any club signing him would be adding proven quality, not taking a risk on potential.
Flick’s side extended his contract through 2030 only last summer. This makes his current situation feel unusual and worth watching closely. Now, the Chelsea door that once seemed firmly shut now appears to be opening again.
