They were keen to get off to a winning start in their home games but knew it would be a challenge against an exciting Real Madrid, who will fancy their chances of going far in the competition.

The visitors' star names in Schroder and Caicedo made their mark early on, but City were able to play through Real Madrid's press with relative ease and caused plenty of problems of their own.

It promised to be an attacking affair and did not disappoint with both teams prepared to take risks, even if they did leave gaps at the back.

City had options they could turn to on the bench, including USA midfielder Sam Coffey, who added intensity when she came on in the second half.

Some of Manchester United's players were watching from the stands at the Joie Stadium, knowing they will face City later this month, and were treated to rich entertainment.

But there was sloppiness from City too as they continued to be put under pressure by the Spanish side, with Clinton giving the ball away and almost allowing Caicedo to make it 2-1.

Caicedo was in on goal again later on when she forced a smart save out of City goalkeeper Yamashita, only for the offside flag to go up.

Jeglertz will have been frustrated by his team struggling to impose control on the game, but they showed resilience to come back from a goal down and secure a point against strong opponents.

Two points from City's opening two matches in the league phase is not a bad tally considering these opponents are likely to be their toughest, even with Paris St-Germain still to come.
