Arsenal suffer MAJOR injury blow in Greece v Netherlands tonight

Christos Tzolis

A goal ruled out is a bad start. A winger who cannot continue is the part that follows the team home.

Hamstring and quad are the words used when a player goes down holding the back of his leg and leaves before the 20th minute. Scans decide which word was right.

International breaks already have a list. This one just added a name.

Christos Tzolis was forced off in the 18th minute of Greece’s Nations League game against the Netherlands in Thessaloniki with an apparent hamstring or quad injury. He had thought he had given Greece an early lead. The strike was disallowed for offside. He went down soon after, shirt and hands over his face, and was replaced by Giorgos Masouras. The Standard says Arsenal are waiting on the severity.

The 23-year-old joined from Club Brugge in July for £34million and has started well. Greece had already stunned Germany last weekend, with Tzolis scoring the equaliser in a comeback win and playing 81 minutes in the second game. Thursday was his third match of the window.

🚨BREAKING: Christos Tzolis has suffered a hamstring injury during Greece’s game against Netherlands tonight.

The winger will undergo a scan tomorrow to determine the extent of the injury.

No diagnosis has been published. “More to follow” is the state of the report. A muscle that ends a game in the first quarter is the same category as Kai Havertz, who is already back at London Colney with a hamstring and no club timescale. Two wide and central forwards on scans in the same break is the problem, not the disallowed goal.

Martin Ødegaard was named in Norway’s squad for Wales after an ankle scan showed no significant damage. Martin Zubimendi came off against Croatia with calf tightness that Luis de la Fuente said was not an injury. Ezri Konsa made the England bench after a minor issue. William Saliba is targeting November. Gabriel and Bruno Guimarães are on individual plans after Brazil.

Tzolis was signed to add goals from the flank after Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard were sold. He cannot do that from a treatment table. Greece still have Germany on Sunday. He will not be in that conversation if the pitchside fear is right.

Arsenal play Leeds on 10 October. Until a scan says otherwise, he is the latest player the break has taken out of the XI and not yet given back. The offside flag was the small blow. The 18th minute was the one that matters.
