Man Utd 'wanted to sign' £55m ex-Leeds gem as Chelsea 'increasingly keen' on powerhouse defender

The latest Premier League transfer news including updates on Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and more

We’re just over a week away from the 2026/27 Premier League season returning, with the extended three-week international break gradually drawing to a close. It’s been a busy spell for England so far, with Thomas Tuchel’s side losing 3-2 to the world champions Spain at Wembley, before bouncing back with a 2-0 away victory in Czechia.

The Three Lions are now gearing up for a trip to take on Croatia - a side they beat 4-2 in a their highly entertaining World Cup opener last summer - which could prove pivotal in deciding whether England are able to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament in June. That game will be followed with a home fixture against Czechia, before the Premier League resumes on 10th October.

Today’s Premier League rumours round-up begins at Liverpool who, given their struggles to find a half-decent right-back, may be starting to regret not being able to tie down Trent Alexander-Arnold to a new deal. He ended up at Real Madrid, but recent reports have linked him with a potential return to Anfield. Football Insider now claim that he’s ready to “snub” any advances from his former side.

They say that despite the 27-year-old struggling to make a big impact for Los Blancos, the player is determined to stay and make the move a success. It’s also claimed that despite the links, Liverpool are in fact not looking to bring the player back to the club, and will pursue other right-back options to fill the void left by the England international’s exit.

The 3AM Verdict: Sure, Trent hasn’t exactly taken La Liga by storm, but why on earth would be try and engineer a Bernabeu exit when he pushed so hard to get his dream move in the first place? The fact he was so eager to leave the Reds also means he’d likely struggle to win the fans back over should he change his mind and seek a move back to Anfield.

Our second story takes us to Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea are trying to figure out how on earth to fix their dire back line - a defence so bad they’ve leaked more goals in the Premier League than any other side so far this season. According to Team Talk, the Blues are now “increasingly keen” on signing Benfica defender Tomas Araujo, with Man United also in the mix.

It’s said that both clubs sent scouts to witness his standout display against AC Milan in the Champions League last month, and that Tottenham and Newcastle are also among his admirers. The player only signed a new deal with the club last month - but it’s worth noting that it contained a £68m release clause.

The 3AM Verdict: Araujo is a real rising talent, and could help improve both the Chelsea and United defence depending on who wins the race to sign him. The 24-year-old still isn’t quite the finished article, however, and it’s hard to see either club meeting his hefty release clause at present. That said, if he has a standout season for club and country, things could change.

We’ll finish things off by revisiting one of the big transfer stories from last summer - Crysencio Summerville’s £55m move from West Ham to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. According to reports from ESPN, the player had interest from the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool last summer, but ultimately chose the more lucrative offer.

It’s worth noting that the source quoted in the article is the player’s personal trainer, so we’ll need to take his word for it. He also suggested that the ex-Leeds United star would earn “a lot more” playing for Al-Hilal rather than staying in the Premier League, and that Real Madrid were also contemplating making an offer.

The 3AM Verdict: The Premier League’s loss is very much the Saudi Pro League’s gain. Those with invested interests can bang on as much as they like about it being a ‘competitive’ division, but it’s hard to argue that, at 24, Summerville should be playing in a league that’sranked below England’s League One by Opta in terms of overall quality.
