Florian Wirtz admitted Germany’s players made things “easy” for him after the Liverpool star produced an eye-catching display against Serbia on Thursday.
Wirtz scored and played a big hand in Tom Bischof’s opener - his strike came back off the post and into the path of the Bayern Munich midfielder, who smashed the ball home - as Jurgen Klopp’s side claimed a 2-0 victory, giving the former Liverpool manager his first win in charge of his country.
It’s Wirtz’s performance though that has got everyone talking. The 23-year-old pulled the strings for Germany, and was also handed the captain’s armband when Serge Gnabry made way in the second half.
It was the sort of performance fans at Liverpool have been hoping to see more of, with Wirtz earning a huge bear hug from Klopp as a result as the former Reds boss was clearly delighted after leaping to the defense of the ex-Bayer Leverkusen star in recent days.
Wirtz’s performance perhaps offers a blueprint for him going forward with his country and his club now, having been given a new-found confidence amid the recent criticism of his performances for Liverpool.
"It was incredibly enjoyable,” Wirtz said after the game. “I think every single player gave everything on the pitch today and followed the game plan.

“We got almost everything right today. Wearing the captain’s armband is something special. It makes you proud. I just tried to give everything I had on the pitch.
“The players around me also made it very easy for me today. There was a lot of movement in our game, and we were all eager to play football. That makes it easier to shine"
Wirtz will have one more chance to shine with his country before he reports back to Anfield, with Germany traveling to Greece on Sunday as Klopp’s side looks to gain revenge for the 1-0 defeat in his first home game in charge.

From there, Wirtz will head back to Merseyside in preparation for Liverpool’s game against Manchester City on October 11, with his place in Andoni Iraola’s side still the subject of scrutiny after a disappointing start to the season.
Liverpool.com says: That feels like something of a message to Liverpool from Wirtz. It does seem as though he wants his teammates to help him out a bit more with their movement, as we saw from Germany yesterday.
Overall though, this was just a much more improved performance from Wirtz, and hopefully that’s a sign of Klopp’s influence taking effect. If that’s a case, then Liverpool might be able to benefit going forward.
