Chelsea youngster Emmanuel Emegha is back in training after recovering from injury, as per latest news. This is a huge boost as Xabi Alonso braces for a worrying spell without Joao Pedro.

Emmanuel Emegha is back in training for the Blues

Emegha joined Chelsea from Strasbourg in a deal worth around £2m, after the Blues moved early to beat off interest from rivals across Europe. A hamstring injury picked up during a friendly against Bromley in July wrecked his pre-season. That kept him out of the club’s tour of Asia and Australia..

Since then, he has made just one matchday squad, as an unused substitute during the Carabao Cup win over Luton Town back in August. That is a frustrating return for a player who scored 8 goals and added 2 assists in 18 games for Strasbourg last campaign. These are the numbers that hinted at real promise before his move to west London.

As reported by Football London, Emegha is back to full training at Cobham during the international break. He was seen alongside fellow summer signing Marco Palestra. The Dutchman is now a genuine option for the trip to Bournemouth on October 10. Nothing is confirmed yet, and a return to training does not guarantee a place in the squad. Nonetheless, after such a difficult start, simply being fit again feels like progress for the young forward and for his manager.

Emegha’s 2025/2026 stats at Strasbourg, as per FOTMOB:

Competitions Appearances Goals Assists Shots Shots on target

Ligue 1 10 4 2 17 8

Coupe de France 1 0 0 1 0

Conference League 7 4 0 9 4

Joao Pedro’s injury leaves Alonso with selection issues

Joao Pedro has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season with 3 goals and 3 assists. However, he picked up a knee problem during the 2-2 draw with Hull City. The knock was described as ligament strain and swelling that could keep him out for close to a month. That is a timeline that puts his involvement against the Cherries in real doubt.

The west London side already felt his absence badly, slumping to a goalless defeat against Brentford before the break. That was their third game without a win in the league. Pedro has been seeing a specialist in London during the international period in an attempt to speed things up. Meanwhile, the club does not consider the issue long term. Losing a player so central to the team’s attacking unit leaves a clear gap.

Chelsea’s plans ahead of the Bournemouth clash

This is exactly the kind of moment Alonso hoped Emegha could eventually give cover for. This comes even if the forward is unlikely to walk straight into the starting eleven. The Spanish coach has already made his admiration clear, saying, “I see him(Emegha) playing on the last line, where he has space. He is such a big threat.”

Chelsea will be facing 5 matches within 21 days once club football resumes. Now, having a fit option to Welbeck suddenly becomes a great deal. Emmanuel Emegha offers something different physically and could give Alonso a new attacking weapon exactly when his squad needs options most.
