Bryan Zaragoza’s career has taken him through some unexpected turns, but one of the most intriguing chapters is the move that never happened.
Before Bayern Munich came calling, FC Barcelona had already explored the possibility of signing the winger. It was an idea that never progressed far enough to become a deal, but Zaragoza has now confirmed that the interest was genuine and that conversations did take place.
Speaking to [Cadena SER Què t’hi Jugues!](https://x.com/QueThiJugues/status/2105249232156307719?s=20), the 25-year-old acknowledged that Barca were once a realistic option. He said:
**“There was indeed a possibility that I would sign with Barça. There were contacts.”**
The timing of those discussions is important as Zaragoza had just emerged as one of the most exciting young attackers in Spain with Granada, combining pace, aggression and one-on-one ability with the kind of unpredictability that often attracts Barcelona’s attention. He later moved to Bayern Munich in January 2024, closing that particular transfer door.
The story did not end there as Barcelona were again linked with him later that year as they explored alternatives in the wide roles, but once more, nothing materialised. His connection with the Catalan club has always carried a certain irony. One of the performances that first pushed Zaragoza into the wider spotlight came against Barcelona, when he produced a display that announced him to a much bigger audience.
He has since pushed back against the idea that one match made his career, arguing that very few players deliver that kind of performance against Barca. There is also a personal connection as Zaragoza revealed that he has developed a close friendship with Lamine Yamal through the Spanish national team, while naming Lionel Messi as his idol and Neymar as another player he admired growing up.
Those comments are likely to attract attention given that he now represents Espanyol, Barcelona’s local rivals, on loan from Bayern. For Barca, though, the more interesting part of the story is how close their paths once came to crossing. Zaragoza eventually chose another route. Years later, he has still found his way back to Barcelona, just not in Blaugrana colours.
