Liverpool are a step closer making a new payment to Chelsea for Rio Ngumoha after he made his competitive England debut on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old sensation came off the bench in the 71st minute as the Three Lions earned a 2-0 win against Czechia in the Nations League. It was his second senior appearance for Thomas Tuchel's side - but his first in a competitive fixture - having played against New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up back in June.

According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea are due a further payment once Ngumoha reaches the required number of first-team appearances for England.

Liverpool paid an initial £2.8m for Ngumoha last year, after the teenager joined the club from Chelsea. It's believed the total package could rise up to £6.8m through additional clauses. The add-ons include appearances for England and achievements at club level with Liverpool, including both from an individual and a team standpoint.

Although the Reds may have to pay a small fee to Chelsea, it will do little to damage the satisfaction they have got from poaching one of the most talented young players in world football right now, with their move for the talent already paying ff.

Ngumoha has had quite the rise since moving to Liverpool two years ago. He made his professional debut in an FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley in January 2025, becoming the club's youngest-ever starter in the process.

But that proved to be Ngumoha's only first-team appearance during that season as he had to wait until the start of the 2025/26 campaign to make his mark with Arne Slot handing him a real chance to impress.

If football fans across the globe didn't know much about Ngumoha, they certainly did when he came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner during a 3-2 win at Newcastle United in August 2025.

It kickstarted a fruitful breakthrough season for Ngumoha, who went on to make 29 appearances in total during 2025/26, with 19 of those coming in the Premier League. He scored his first top-flight goal in a 2-0 win against Fulham in April 2026 and helped the Reds earn Champions League qualification.

This season, Ngumoha has already clocked 232 minutes in five matches for the Reds, and is an important member of Andoni Iraola's senior squad at Anfield. As a reward, it's thought that Ngumoha is in talks about a new, bumper long-term contract, having signed his first professional deal 12 months ago.
