Jurgen Klopp left the Allianz Arena on Thursday night in the kind of mood Liverpool supporters will remember well.
The former Reds manager watched his Germany side control their UEFA Nations League meeting with Serbia from start to finish in Munich, running out comfortable winners by two goals to nil.
Speaking afterwards, Klopp described it as a “perfect night” and made clear he was delighted with every phase of the performance.
The German coach praised his side’s positioning inside the penalty area, the courage they showed when winning the ball back as a unit and the way the back line defended with an attacking mindset.
In his view, Germany were outstanding without the ball and played wonderful football when they had it.
Klopp also insisted the display must become the minimum standard rather than a one off.
He described the win as the next step in his team’s development and said it was a match he would keep in his archive, adding that his players are learning under pressure.
Yet the comments that will travel furthest on Merseyside concerned one player in particular.
Florian Wirtz scored Germany’s second goal and drew special praise from his manager at the post match press conference.
Klopp explained at the post-match press conference, “The way we want to play suits Florian Wirtz,”
“I think everyone at Liverpool is very happy today.”
“The player enjoys football to the fullest, and he worked hard and with great intensity.”
That final point matters.
Wirtz arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for a fee reported at £100 million, potentially rising to £116 million, which was a British record at the time.
Creativity has never been in doubt with the 23 year old.
Hearing his international manager highlight his work rate alongside his quality is a strong sign of the all round player Liverpool believed they were signing.
Klopp’s words also carry extra weight given his history.
Few people understand the demands of Anfield better than the man who spent almost nine years in charge there, delivering both the Premier League and the Champions League.
When he says Liverpool should be happy, supporters will take notice.
Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic was the other player singled out, with Klopp remarking that he seemed to be everywhere on the pitch.
For Liverpool and Andoni Iraola, the timing could hardly be better.
A demanding run of 10 matches in 28 days awaits once club football resumes, and a confident Wirtz returning from international duty would be a welcome boost.
If the playmaker carries this form back to Merseyside, Klopp may not be the only one smiling.
