The ramifications concerning Manchester City and the Premier League could stretch outside the realm of football.

The UK government have been warned that billions of pounds are at stake amid the ongoing saga surrounding Manchester City’s battle with the Premier League. City were found guilty by an independent commission of all charges related to serious breaches of the regulations over a nine-season period, and the majority of charges related to its failure to co-operate with the investigation. The club have appealed the independent commission's decision, with their hierarchy adamant they are innocent. The sanction is yet to be decided, with a separate hearing set to be held to determine how City will be punished. The result of the appeal could impact that, but outside the realms of football, there are suggestions from UAE officials to the UK government that the severity of the sanction may affect business between the two countries.

It’s reported by Bloomberg that those officials consider the Premier League’s actions to have a future impact on the bilateral state relationship. The UAE have invested over £30billion into UK sectors across the past five years, with suggestions that a harsh punishment could impact future endeavours.
The sectors include defence, life sciences, and technology. There is no appetite on either side to sever that relationship, but it remains to be seen how the fallout from the City case will affect it.
In the meantime, City have announced their intention to appeal. In a statement, they said: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.

“The club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe. The club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case. We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete.”
Meanwhile, the Premier League said: “Manchester City FC has appealed the decision of an independent Commission regarding breaches of Premier League rules. The club lodged the appeal to the Chair of the Judicial Panel.
“The independent Appeal Board hearing will remain private and confidential until publication of the outcome is permitted.”
