The transfer window may have only closed a few weeks ago, but the rumour mill never stops.
Indeed, there’s always talk of potential moves for January or next summer, and this week, there have been a few interesting whispers around Everton and one of their star players.
Jordan Pickford was tentatively linked with a move to Bayern Munich this week. Pickford is, of course, one of Everton’s most important players, so losing the England star would be a big blow.
However, according to Christian Falk, speaking on the Bayern Insider Podcast, there is no truth to these rumours.
Jordan Pickford not set for Bayern Munich move
Falk shared what he’s heard on his end about Pickford and Bayern Munich.
The journalist says that Bayern are indeed looking for a new goalkeeper, and a meeting was held this week about a potential move. However, Pickford’s name was not brought up in these discussions.
“I mean, is there any truth to recent reports suggesting that Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is also on the shortlist?” Falk was asked.
“So that’s not true. Not in the discussion they have had this week.
“There was a meeting this week talking about goalkeepers who can be the next number two, and Pickford was not on the list.
“You never can say what happens when the other goalkeeper says, I don’t want go to Bayern Munich, because the other goalkeepers are all number one goalkeepers at their clubs, and it’s not so easy to give the place away and say, I’m a number two.
“But number two in a top club like Bayern Munich is a big thing. Jonas Urbig made about 30 matches already and is the number two at the moment. So there are many names which were discussed, but that was German names.
“You mentioned already Bernd Leno. He is indeed an option, but there are also other goalkeepers like Finn Dahmen. He’s the keeper of Augsburg. He has also an English mother, so if you need a goalkeeper for the national team… He has a chance still to play for England.
“And there is always another one like Oliver Baumann. He was number one in Germany for a short time in the qualifying for the World Cup, but he won’t get the record of the most matches played in Bundesliga at the moment, Charly Körbel. He has to play a little bit more to get this record, but he can only make it at Hoffenheim, where he is the keeper, not at Bayern Munich.
“And there is Marvin Schwäbe, the goalkeeper of Cologne, who is also on the list. So you see Bayern Munich is discussing a lot of players, but already players who are number one, and I don’t know if Pickford would be number two at Bayern Munich.”
Pickford is certainly good enough to play for a club like Bayern Munich, but, as Falk says, he’s not likely to want to move to be a number two, certainly not at this point.
For the first time in a while, Pickford’s England spot is under threat as James Trafford seems to be an evermore prominent figure in Thomas Tuchel’s thinking, and if Pickford wants to retain his place as England’s number one, he needs to be starting every week at Everton, not sitting on the bench at Bayern Munich or another club of that stature.
