Hugo Ekitike may be injured but his watch game scores another banger

Look, I’m not going to deny I haven’t missed the flair, muscle and general menace that Hugo Ekitike adds to Liverpool’s attacking threat. The savage achilles injury he sustained back in April was a cruel way to end the Frenchman’s first season in the Premier League, and was a hammerblow as it consequently ruled him out of the World Cup too.

But, on the flip side it has meant we’ve all been treated to getting to know the other side to Ekitike –that fashion prowess hits different, and more specifically his affection for ‘not your average’ watches is as unpredictable as his dribbling skills; you never know where he’s gonna go next.

Of the course of the past few months, I've seen vintage APs, a few Richard Milles and a mix of Chopards too. Last month, while his teammates were getting back into the swing of a new season, the 24-year-old striker went viral for somehow dressing Balenciaga’s Pierpaolo Piccioli up in a Liverpool away shirt. That day in Piccioli’s office, he had a Chopard Eagle Alpine strapped to his wrist. Managing his recovery in style, Ekitike’s just been serving a generational run of mad fits while touring New York, which is where I clocked him copping a couple of Richard Milles – a white one that could well be the RM 55-01, the very same one Erling Haaland and Declan Rice have in their collections.

Ekitike’s link up with Piccioli came to fruition this week as he was once again one of the star names to attend the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week. And while I’m very down with the whole hooded overcoat he had going on, I’m far more interested in the Chopard watch I spotted on his wrist as he sat chatting to Anna Wintour and Love Story’s Sarah Pidgeon.

If it doesn’t look familiar, that’s because it isn’t. Most footballers splash out on an AP Royal, Rolex Daytona or Datejust or some kind of Patek. But respectfully Hugo Ekitike has no interest in doing what most footballers do. Which is why he’s out here debuting a watch that was only released a few weeks ago. Chopard’s new 34mm Happy Diamonds Heritage in yellow gold is pretty distinctive looking and there’s some fun to be had inside that square case; think marble mazes but with diamonds.

Yep, the diamonds you see on that black onyx dial aren’t static settings, they dance around when the wearer moves, hence the Happy name. It’s 50 years since this cushion-shaped watch first appeared so Ekitike’s new flex is a welcome nod to one of Chopard’s iconic models.

If the rumours are true, Ekitike is on track to be back playing for Liverpool next month. Ekitike on the move and happy – just like his Chopard; I'm filing that under things I love to see.
