Harrison Armstrong has covered more ground than any other Premier League player this season, underlining the remarkable start the Everton youngster has made under David Moyes.
The 19-year-old has run 60.4km across the opening five league matches, putting him top of the Premier League rankings and ahead of Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross, his nearest challenger on 59.7km.
Armstrong has started every league game for Everton this season and played all but four minutes, establishing himself as a regular in Moyes’ midfield.
Armstrong sets the Premier League pace
His biggest shift came in the 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at the Hill Dickinson, when Armstrong covered 12.9km. That remains the greatest distance covered by any player in a single Premier League match this season and was 1.1km further than anyone else managed on the pitch that afternoon.
Armstrong also covered 12.41km against Crystal Palace, another figure which places him among the highest individual totals recorded across the division so far. These numbers provide another indication of how quickly the academy graduate has established himself in Moyes’ side. Armstrong is the first teenager since Ross Barkley in 2013/14 to start Everton’s opening five Premier League matches of a season.
His progress has also been recognised at international level. Armstrong was promoted to the England Under-21 squad this week after initially joining up with the Under-20s. He has since joined Everton teammates Tyler Dibling and Tyrique George in Lee Carsley’s squad for the remainder of the international window.
Everton highlighted Armstrong’s running numbers themselves on Thursday with a simple message: “Every blade of grass.” The description isn’t far off. Five Premier League matches into the season, nobody has covered more of it.
