Christian Norgaard could finally make his Everton debut against Hull City after returning to first-team training at Finch Farm.
The 32-year-old is yet to make a competitive appearance following his £7m summer move from Arsenal, with a groin problem delaying the start of his Everton career.
Norgaard has now been pictured back working with the group and could come into contention when Everton return to Premier League action at Hull on 11 October.
Norgaard closes in on Everton debut
David Moyes said before the international break that Everton hoped to have Norgaard available when club football resumed, describing the experienced midfielder as “hugely important” to his plans.
His return to training at Finch Farm is therefore encouraging, although Everton have not yet confirmed that he will be fit enough to feature at the MKM Stadium.
TEAMtalk has raised the possibility of Norgaard getting his first Everton minutes against Hull, with Moyes potentially needing to make changes following Vitalii Mykolenko’s injury on international duty. There is no obvious route from Mykolenko’s absence directly into the side for Norgaard, who operates in central midfield.
Moyes does, however, have the option of using the versatile James Garner as an emergency left-back if Mykolenko isn’t available. Garner has filled that role before, although moving him out of midfield would leave another decision to make alongside Harrison Armstrong.
Hayden Hackney would appear the more natural candidate to start there, particularly with Norgaard only recently returning to full training. For the Dane, Hull may instead offer an opportunity to get his first competitive minutes from the bench rather than immediately being asked to start.
Given the relatively small squad Moyes is working with, simply having Norgaard available would increase his options. After spending the opening weeks of his Everton career on the sidelines, his long-awaited debut now appears to be getting closer.
