Liverpool officially confirm forward suffers Achilles injury

Liverpool have been dealt a major injury blow, with one of their forwards facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a midweek cup tie.

The Reds travelled to Birmingham City on Wednesday night, but the evening turned sour when the attacker went down shortly before half time.

Medical staff rushed on, and the player had to be stretchered off, leaving teammates and supporters fearing the worst.

Those fears have now been confirmed.

In an official update, the club revealed that scans have shown a rupture of the Achilles tendon, one of the most serious injuries a footballer can suffer.

The player will now undergo a specialist review to determine the next steps, and the club has made clear that everyone at Liverpool will offer full support throughout the recovery.

The news is a cruel blow for the Switzerland international Aurelie Csillag, who had only just begun to find her rhythm in England.

Csillag, who turned 23 in January, joined Liverpool from SC Freiburg during the January 2026 transfer window, one of several arrivals as Gareth Taylor looked to lift his side away from the bottom of the Women’s Super League.

She arrived with a growing reputation.

After breaking into the first team at FC Blue Stars Zurich in 2020, Csillag moved to FC Basel in February 2023 before switching to Freiburg in the summer of 2025.

She scored four goals in 14 appearances for the German club before heading to Merseyside.

Her first half season at Liverpool brought 12 appearances and one goal across all competitions, and she had started the new campaign brightly.

Last month she came off the bench at half time against Tottenham Hotspur and headed in an equaliser to earn the Reds a point in the WSL.

At international level, Csillag has also been making progress.

She scored her first senior goal for Switzerland in a friendly against Wales in December 2025 and has since found the net in Women’s World Cup qualifying.

Known for her pace and confidence in one on one situations, she has given Taylor a direct threat from either flank.

Liverpool have not put a timeframe on her absence, and the specialist review will shape the road ahead.

However, Achilles ruptures typically keep footballers out for many months, meaning Csillag faces a long journey back.

For a player who described the WSL as a childhood dream, it is a painful setback.

Everyone at the club will now hope to see her back on the pitch, stronger than ever.
