Chelsea poised for another Rio Ngumoha windfall

Rio Ngumoha’s latest England milestone could lead to further opportunities, with a reduced squad improving the Liverpool forward’s chances of featuring against Croatia and Czechia.

Ngumoha made his competitive international debut in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Czechia in Prague, becoming England’s third-youngest competitive debutant behind Wayne Rooney and Jude Bellingham.

The teenager had previously been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s matchday squad for the opening Nations League fixture against Spain.

Nico O’Reilly’s withdrawal has since reduced the options available to Tuchel, potentially creating a clearer path for Ngumoha to feature. However, earning minutes remains a separate challenge.

Ngumoha’s international breakthrough follows several milestones at club level. He became Liverpool’s youngest player to start a first-team match when he featured against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup aged 16.

He later made his Premier League debut as a substitute in Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle United. The 18-year-old has made three Premier League appearances under Andoni Iraola this season, including one start.

Liverpool were ordered to pay Chelsea an initial £2.8million for Ngumoha, who recently turned 18. According to the Daily Mail, the fee could rise to £6.8million through add-ons linked to England appearances and success at Anfield.

Chelsea are also set to receive an additional payment when Ngumoha reaches a certain number of senior England appearances. The winger earned his second cap against Czechia.

Ngumoha, who is wanted by Arsenal is currently in talks with Liverpool over a new improved contract. He will look to add to his growing tally of England caps during the remainder of the international window.

England face a difficult trip to Croatia before hosting Czechia in the reverse Nations League fixture. After international duty, Ngumoha will return to Merseyside for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City on October 11, with his recent involvement strengthening his case for a place in the matchday squad.
