Trent Alexander-Arnold’s time at Real Madrid isn’t necessarily going to plan currently, but could a reunion with Liverpool potentially be on the cards?

The 27-year-old controversially departed the Reds in the summer of 2024, hampering his legacy after many supporters hoped he would stay at Anfield for the rest of his career.

Alexander-Arnold hasn’t fully convinced in a Madrid shirt, however, and Jose Mourinho is preferring Denzel Dumfries at right-back currently, also subtly criticising his efforts in a midfield role, despite some praise at the same time:

“I thank Trent Alexander-Arnold for his efforts to play in a position that is not his. It’s very clear that his qualities are made for the full-back position, not for midfield.

“He has played midfield with England and Liverpool…but he is not a midfielder. He has played very well. He has interpreted what he needed to really well, tactically. Both him and Valverde have worked very well at this level.”

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown played down the idea of Alexander-Arnold returning to Liverpool in the future, despite it being mooted of late:

“It would be a huge surprise if Liverpool looked to bring Alexander-Arnold back. I’m led to believe things haven’t quite worked out for him at Real Madrid so far, but he made his bed and now he has to lay in it, I don’t think he’ll be looking to leave already.

“A lot of work went into the deal to lure him to Real Madrid in the first place, the club pushed really hard for it and he had a big decision to make. By all accounts, it was his dream move, so I don’t expect him to be willing to call time on that just yet. He’s going to be working hard to prove he deserves to be there.

“Alexander-Arnold will be determined to make something of his Real Madrid career, so any suggestions of a move back to Liverpool can be cast aside for now. I’m not convinced it would be the best move for him anyway, when you consider how the fans reacted when he left in the first place.”

Could Trent Alexander-Arnold really return to Liverpool?

Alexander-Arnold may have angered some by choosing to leave Liverpool two years ago, but having him back at the club would still be a great footballing decision.

He is one of the most unique full-backs of his generation, producing world-class quality from right-back, and it is a position where the Reds are lacking, despite Ronald Araujo impressing there this season.

But realistically, it is extremely hard to see Alexander-Arnold sealing a Liverpool reunion, with that part of his career now in the past, as he looks to make the grade at Madrid and not allow his peak years to drfit by.

Things aren’t going too swimmingly under Mourinho, but Alexander-Arnold is a driven character who will want to become a success story, and even if he doesn’t, it feels likely that he will move elsewhere, instead of to the Reds.
