Liverpool have been linked with a move for Mexico star Gilberto Mora, and a new update has claimed that he has a “preference” for his next destination.

The 17-year-old was one of the standout young players at the 2026 World Cup, and he has a huge future ahead of him, with Andre Jardine lauding his quality:

“I’ve dedicated my life to working with young talent in youth systems, and it’s rare to see a player like him. Mexico has a gem here, it’s not normal to see a player like that, he is an exceptional player. He possesses great character, is taking full advantage of his national team experience, and he’s undoubtedly special. I believe he embodies a bright future for Mexican soccer.”

Liverpool have been mentioned as an option for Mora, whose current deal with Tijuana doesn’t expire until the summer of 2029, but a fresh update has now emerged.

According to Football Insider, the £40m-rated midfielder “would prefer to move to Spain” than to Liverpool, adding that he is “on the radar of all of Europe’s leading clubs.”

The report states that the Reds are “long-term admirers” of Mora, but are “likely to find it difficult to fend off the interest from” Barcelona and Real Madrid. The two La Liga giants are his specific “preference”.

Gilberto Mora another superb young option for Liverpool

Liverpool have some great young players in their ranks currently, not least Jeremy Jacquet, who has started the season superbly and has been praised by Virgil van Dijk:

“There is obviously a lot of praise and rightly so, but I know how it works when you play a game not at the standards you have set. So let’s just stay calm, keep working, and try to stay important for us. It [the partnership] is still a work in progress.

“There are still things we can improve but you learn by playing games. I said at the start that you experience things in games and see how each other react to certain moments, and then you adapt to that.

“So far, it is good. He is 21 years old and very promising, but it is up to him to keep working hard and staying calm. It’s a big credit to him how he started his Liverpool career, but we are in September. Hopefully there are years of his Liverpool career left.”

In Mora, Liverpool would be signing another fantastic footballer, but it looks as though they are well behind Barca and Madrid in the battle to snap him up.

Andoni Iraola is a manager who promotes youth, which may appeal to the Mexican, but realistically, it is hard to see a deal happening any time soon.

Central midfield has to be a priority position for Liverpool, though, with influential Monaco ace Lamine Camara emerging as both a leading and ideal option.

A January move for the Senegalese would be perfect, but if that doesn’t happen, they must sign him or a player of a similar ilk at the end of this season.
