West Ham United want to sign Arsenal star on loan in January

A teenager who cannot leave until his birthday is already on a list. The clubs doing the asking still have to offer him a team.

Loans from a Champions League side work when the player starts. A place on the bench behind the captain is a different offer.

January is the first window he is allowed to go. It is not the window anyone has to use.

West Ham have been backed to join the race for Max Dowman on loan, Claret and Hugh reports. The 16-year-old becomes eligible for a temporary move when he turns 17 on 31 December. More than a dozen clubs have already contacted Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has said the club will assess what is best for him every six months, based on the minutes he is playing and the quality of them.

The problem, from a West Ham point of view, is Jarrod Bowen. Dowman has been used mainly as a right-sided attacker, the same flank as the captain who is leading their promotion push from the Championship.

A loan that leaves him behind Bowen does not give Arsenal the guaranteed starts Arteta would want. Cover for a long second-tier season is not the same as a run of games for the most prized youngster at the club.

West Ham already have Divine Mukasa on loan from Manchester City, a former academy player who has started. That deal is the comparison being made. Dowman would not arrive with the same claim on the shirt.

He has spent this break with England Under-19s. He scored the winner in a 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland, playing 81 minutes, then came on for the last half-hour of a 2-1 win over Norway after Ife Ibrahim’s debut. Those are international minutes, not a loan announcement.

Arsenal have no need to send him to a bench in January. He is already in the first-team picture in cups and on the fringes of league squads. A Championship loan only makes sense if the buying club can promise the right-wing starts Bowen currently takes. Claret and Hugh’s own conclusion is that West Ham cannot.

No bid has been reported. No Arteta quote has opened the door to east London specifically. The file is a birthday, a rule on loans, and a dozen clubs asking. Bowen is why one of them is an awkward fit.
