Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney and his wife, TV personality Coleen, have four sons who are starting to attract attention in their own right through their footballing pursuits. Most recently, the couple's youngest, Cass, was released by Everton.

Hailed amongst the Toffees' and United's greatest-ever players, the Liverpudlian's 253 goals for the latter establishes him as the club's all-time leading marksman. Wayne's children are now attempting to emulate his achievements.

While they will face greater scrutiny than most aspiring young footballers, England icon Wayne has stated he wishes his sons to carve out their own identities as they begin their sporting careers. Here we examine Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass Rooney and their footballing journeys to date.

Kai

Kai is the eldest of the quartet. He previously had a stint in the academy of local rivals Man City and played in the United States while his dad was at DC United, but he returned to United aged 11 and went on to register 56 goals and 28 assists in the 2021/22 season.

He's excelled as he's progressed through the age groups and made his Old Trafford bow in January when the U18s defeated Derby 2-1 in an FA Youth Cup fixture. He has since signed a scholarship this summer and harbours strong ambitions of progressing into Michael Carrick's first team squad in the relatively near future.

Speaking on the new Disney+ docuseries The Real Rooneys, Wayne disclosed he will allow Kai to determine his own route in the game. He said: "Kai wants his own legacy, and I'll be there to support him. What I don't want is him to get a scholarship or get a contract because of me.

"I want it to be because of him in his own right. It's something he's wanted for a long time, so [I'll] be proud, really proud of him to get a scholarship."

Klay

Second-eldest Klay is also within United's youth set-up. In 2025, Wayne was present to watch the 13-year-old represent United's U12s at a youth tournament in Spain.

Klay's team took on UE Quart at the prestigious MICFootball competition in Girona. He has reportedly been travelling abroad for tournaments with United since eight years of age.

In April 2022, Wayne shared a photograph of Klay during his first tournament away from home, writing: "First tournament away. Good luck Klay," alongside a heart emoji.

Kit

Kit seems to have abandoned football for an emerging career in darts, at least for now. Coleen has revealed the 10-year-old has shifted his focus to darts after "retiring" from football, opting not to continue with the sport.

Despite being a devoted United supporter, Kit marked his ninth birthday with a darts-themed celebration in January 2025. Discussing his aspiration to turn professional at darts, Coleen told The Sun: "The third one... this is the darts one - he wants to become a darts player at the minute."

He even encountered his hero Luke Littler at Alexandra Palace in January 2025 following the Nuke's maiden World Championship triumph.

Cass

Eight-year-old Cass had been playing for Everton's academy until recently. Speaking on the Therapy Crouch podcast with former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch and his wife, model Abbey Clancy, Wayne and Coleen discussed delivering the difficult news to their youngest son after he was released by the Toffees.

"The youngest one, he got let go," Coleen said. "That was the hardest thing. Because the older two had been there and stayed there at United, Cass was at Everton.

"It was only Under-7s and he is a massive Evertonian, so he's got a season ticket and he loves Everton. So, the fact that he was there was everything to him.

"We knew, because it was a big squad, and obviously, then going into the Under-9s, you get signed then. We knew he wasn't going to stay because he wasn't one of the stronger ones there and the day came when we got the phone call.

"I was like, 'Cass, I've had a call and you're not going to be going into the next [year at Everton]' and he threw his head into his hands and he just burst out crying. But an hour later? He forgot about it. He was fine. He still plays for his grassroots team and he was on the phone straight away to my mum and dad saying, 'Everton have released me.'"
