Liverpool began the 2026/27 season with two unconvincing draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Since then, their form has improved, winning four out of their last five in all competitions. They have looked tighter defensively, and a big reason for that has been the impressive form of French international Jeremy Jacquet, who joined the club from Rennes in a £60 million deal. Following his first two caps for France, Jacquet received high praise from his national team head coach Zinedine Zidane.

Jeremy Jacquet Impresses at Liverpool

Jacquet Progresses Quickly

Jacquet has already shown what a shrewd signing he is for Liverpool. At 21 years old, he is nowhere near the finished article, but the start has been very promising. Before this extended international break, where Jacquet earned his first two caps for his country, he impressed in front of the Kop, under the guidance of Andoni Iraola.

His ability to step out of defence and break up opposition attacks or pick a pass to one of his attacking teammates is done with grace. He’s shown a willingness to face up to a variety of strikers and win the majority of his duels, which has benefited his team and given Virgil van Dijk the partner he deserves.

After a recent 1-0 win at Bournemouth, Iraola addressed the improvements in Jacquet’s physical development:

“He’s still very young. He is adapting really well to the Premier League,” he said. “In the first games, physically he was feeling the change of rhythm. He was finishing with cramp, really tired, and we had to sub him.

“Today has been a step forward. He looked solid until the end, and he’s finished physically in a good place.”

Looking at the youngster, it’s his all-round ability that impresses most. He has the potential to be a complete defender, which caught the eye of French boss Zinedine Zidane.

Zinedine Zidane Delivers Praise for Jeremy Jacquet

The 21-year-old centre-back recently earned his first two caps for France, first in a 1-0 win vs Belgium, which was followed by the recent 1-1 draw against Italy. Speaking to reporters after the game, Zidane recognised the performance of Jacquet: “Very good. Very, very good. Brave.

“He wasn’t afraid to come out a long way. Very good in the duels. He was, once again, very good. I said it four times,” said Zidane after the recent 1-1 draw with Italy.

The Last Word

Reflecting on his first period with the French squad, Jacquet said:

“To train with all these great players, it’s just a great pleasure. I’m just trying to make the most of every moment.”

At 21, and with his injury problems hopefully behind him, we can see the uninterrupted progression of Jeremy Jacquet, because the Liverpool defender is clearly a huge talent.

Chelsea and others were interested, but Liverpool won the race, and it looks like they have acquired a future star!
