England manager Thomas Tuchel has conceded that Manchester City’s guilty verdict has become a “big subject” among his squad and suggested he would keep selecting the club’s players even if they were expelled from the Premier League.

Wherever Manchester City’s players have gone of late, the club’s guilty verdict has followed, and international duty has proved no exception.

Reunited with the England squad for this window’s Nations League fixtures, Manchester City’s contingent have found the topic impossible to sidestep, and their national-team manager has now acknowledged as much.

Speaking as his squad prepare to face Croatia on Saturday evening, Tuchel opened up on how heavily the saga is hanging over the group. He also went further by offering a hint of just how far he would go to keep selecting the club’s players, whatever punishment ultimately comes their way.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has downplayed the idea that the storm surrounding Manchester City’s legal battle unsettled his players after two of the club’s squad made costly errors in a chastening UEFA Nations League loss to Spain on Saturday.

Everyone Speaks About It, Says Tuchel on Man City Charges Talk in England Camp

Asked about the mood in the camp, Tuchel made no attempt to pretend the subject had not come up. “We had some time off between the matches and it is a big subject,” he said. “Everyone speaks about it, so there is no other voice needed. I am glad to be not that voice. No one needs my half knowledge on the topic.

“Of course, the players talk about it. City players talk about it. We talk with them but only briefly. They are ready to go tomorrow. But of course, it’s a big topic in the camp.”

Manchester City are represented in the current squad by Marc Guehi and Elliot Anderson. A third, Nico O’Reilly, pulled out this week to undergo an injury assessment back in Manchester. England themselves are stationed in Rijeka ahead of a UEFA Nations League meeting with Croatia on Saturday. just over a week on from the verdict first leaking.

Tuchel’s Selection Vow

The most eye-catching of Tuchel’s comments concerned the future of that English City contingent. Asked whether a worst-case outcome the club - expulsion from the top-flight is being touted as a possibility should their appeal be rejected - might affect his thinking, the German made it clear he would not shut the door on players simply because of which division their club plays in.

“I would always try to pick the best team for the camp, occasion, the tournament,” he added. “I will never rule out that because they don’t play in the top flight in their country. We need to look at it case by case.”

It is a hypothetical that would have seemed absurd not long ago, yet one that now merits a serious answer, such is the scale of what Manchester City are confronting.

A separate sanctions hearing is still to come, and some within the game have pushed for a points deduction heavy enough to amount to relegation, with expulsion floated as the most drastic outcome of all.

City Launch Their Appeal

That fightback became formal on Friday morning, when the club confirmed it had lodged its appeal against the independent commission’s ruling. “The club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe,” a statement read.

“The club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions relating to this case.”

The statement added that City would “continue to respect due process” and were restricted in what more they could say until the proceedings reach their conclusion. For Tuchel’s players, and for everyone else caught up in it, the saga that has gripped the England camp this week still looks some distance from being over.
