Liverpool are regularly linked with a move to sign Bayern Munich superstar Michael Olise, and the news that contract talks are not going smoothly will please the higher-ups at Anfield.

The Reds need a replacement for Mohamed Salah, but the Egyptian King is not easily replaced. Olise and Lamine Yamal are perhaps the only two players in the world worthy of inheriting his mantle, but both are borderline impossible to sign.

Barcelona will likely never sell Yamal if they get their way, but Olise seems to be attainable even if the finances involved may dwarf the £125m paid for Alexander Isak in 2025.

Last season, Olise scored 22 goals and assisted 31 for a total of 53 goal contributions. He already has 8 goals and 4 assists in 7 games this season, suggesting that last season was no fluke.

Bayern Munich contract talks with Olise described as “difficult”

Contract talks for most players are an exciting thing. It’s a guarantee of a higher income over a longer period.

However, the better the player, the higher the risk involved in signing a new long-term deal.

A player like Olise must be careful not to limit his options by signing a deal that prevents him from leaving if he has a change of heart. Transfermarkt places Olise’s market value at €180m (£153m), which means that if he signs a deal without a release clause, it becomes nearly impossible to complete a transfer to a new club.

Only Neymar (€222m) and Mbappe (€180m) have completed transfers at the price point Olise is valued at, and it was PSG that paid the fees both times.

This is the issue that German newspaper BILD touches on in their report on Olise’s contract impasse with Bayern. The player wants a release clause in a potential new contract, while Bayern are unwilling to allow one to be inserted in his deal.

Olise’s current deal with Bayern expires in 2029, meaning there are three years until he is a free agent, so if contract talks collapse, the German club will need to make a decision on when to sell him. It would likely mean a summer sale in 2027 to capitalise on his massive transfer value.
