The behind-closed-doors meeting took place against Xabi Alonso’s side at their Cobham training ground.

And the victory is one which gives John Mousinho’s men a shot in the arm, with attentions now turning to the trip along the M27 a week tomorrow.

The Chelsea game was one factored in to keep Pompey ticking over amid the three-week international break they are currently in the midst of.

The outing has served that purpose, as Mousinho attempts to find a balance between keeping his players fresh and match sharp ahead of the trip to St Mary’s Stadium.

The Pompey boss gave his group some time off across the first week of the break before they returned last weekend.

It’s been business as usual this week culminating in the Chelsea success, with focus now zeroing in on taking on Tonda Eckert’s side.

Pompey are hopeful of having striker Marko Milovanović back for that game after suffering a calf injury.

The match is expected to arrive too soon for Conor Shaughnessy, though there is positive news over extent of his groin injured suffered against Blackburn Rovers.

Mousinho indicated he felt the friendly was necessary for Pompey, as he discussed how the international break will look for his team.

He said: ‘There’s a little bit of a balance between having a break and keeping them fit.

‘We’ll keep training through the break, that’s the most important thing. We'll do a lot of work which involves bigger pitches and even 11-a-sides to make sure we’re as close to full match fitness as possible.

‘We will come off it in the first week, but there’s only so many days you can have off before you need to get back training. So we’ll bear that in mind.

‘There’s also a couple of potential options for friendlies. We’ll possibly look at that for the second weekend.’
