Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the race to sign Benfica star Vangelis Pavlidis, and may have an advantage over Barcelona in the battle for his signature. Spurs had a busy summer transfer window and could look to make further additions when the window opens once again in the New Year.

‌

Roberto De Zerbi added 10 new signings in the summer, with Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Savio, Martin Dubravka, Mykhailo Mudryk, Tosin Adarabioyo, Omar Marmoush and Sandro Tonali all moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

‌

Spurs have had a tough start to the season, picking up just two points from their opening five Premier League fixtures and are yet to get their first win on the board in the top flight.

As a result, rumours are already starting to swirl about the players who Spurs could look to sign in January when the transfer window reopens.

It has been reported by Portuguese publication A Bola that Pavlidis, 27, has emerged as a potential target for Tottenham, having identified the forward as a target back in the summer.

The report claims that Spurs were joined by Barcelona, AC Milan, Roma, Juventus, Fenerbahce and Aston Villa in expressing an interest in Pavlidis, who has a €100million (£85million) release clause in his contract.

What may give Tottenham an advantage over the likes of Barcelona is that, according to the report, Pavlidis would prefer a ‘dream move’ to the Premier League if he were to complete a transfer away from Benfica.

The report also goes further to claim that Tottenham have sent scouts to watch Pavlidis in action for Benfica, most recently in the club’s 3-1 defeat to Porto back in September.

Pavlidis has made 13 appearances so far this season for Benfica and already has 14 goals to his name, eight of which have come in the Portuguese top flight.

It remains to be seen what plans Tottenham will have for the January transfer window opens, with several more games left to play before the New Year arrives.

Tottenham return to Premier League action on Saturday, October 10 when they face Manchester United in an away trip to Old Trafford in their first fixture after the extended international break.
