Liverpool given clear response in transfer push for Virgil van Dijk successor

With Virgil van Dijk's contract dwindling down at Liverpool, the Reds are seemingly looking at possible replacements in the transfer market for the months ahead

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is facing an uncertain few months ahead, with his contract continuing to dwindle at Anfield towards its expiration.

‌

The Reds extended the defender's contract back in 2024, but with just a two-year deal on the table, the club is at real risk of losing him as a free agent at the end of the season.

While his current centre-back partner, Jeremy Jacquet, appears to be quite the find from the recruitment team, an exit for Van Dijk would still be a huge loss to Andoni Iraola in both quality and the standards that are set within the team.

It's unclear at this stage whether Liverpool is willing to offer the club captain a new contract extension, or whether a replacement may be needed in the market, but it seems as though the hierarchy will need to plan for both possibilities.

In terms of potential transfer targets, there are seemingly some options on the table for the Reds already. One of them is Tottenham's Micky van de Ven.

The Netherlands international has been linked with a move to Anfield in the past, with his pace and experience of the Premier League offering the side a chance to land a potential ideal option for the backline.

A deal appears difficult if that is the choice Liverpool makes, after Van de Ven signed a contract in August that keeps him tied down with the North London club until 2031.

That puts all of the cards in Tottenham's hand, and while a deal could still be negotiated, Football Insider claims that Spurs have no interest in facilitating a sale, despite the Merseyside outfit lining up a potential transfer switch.

There is also claimed to be interest from Manchester United, but as it stands, Tottenham's stance will seemingly make it impossible for any team to make a move.

That could send Liverpool, and its rivals, back to the drawing board in terms of transfer targets. However, it's better for the club to know now rather than later, should Van Dijk make the decision to leave or a new contract isn't sent his way.

There are still many months to go until that possibility, giving some time to sporting director Julian Ward and his team, but the shortlist will have to be considered when looking into the market.

It will be a huge task to find a possible replacement for Van Dijk, but the centre-back ranks aren't the only ones that need to be considered by the recruitment team.

With concerns in midfield, at right-back, and at right-wing, Liverpool has plenty to fix in the upcoming transfer markets. Whether all of those issues can be solved remains to be seen.
