Sean Dyche has questioned the confidence of modern football supporters when discussing tactics, while also revisiting the financial turmoil that dominated part of his time at Everton.
The former Everton manager believes the increased availability of tactical analysis has given supporters a greater understanding of the game, but also encouraged some to believe they know more than the professionals working within it.
Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with The Times, Dyche summed up the change with characteristic bluntness: “The marvel is fans have a better understanding. The madness is fans now presume they know everything.”
Dyche questions modern tactical debate
Dyche used conversations with his own friends to make the point, joking that he tells them to stop when their discussions become too tactical.
“My mate is a plasterer, how does he think he knows more than me?” he asked.
The comments weren’t directed specifically at Evertonians, and shouldn’t be presented that way. They will nevertheless resonate with those who remember the increasingly fierce debate around Dyche’s tactics and style of football during the latter stages of his Goodison Park tenure.
There is another Everton connection in the interview that is considerably more direct.
Discussing Manchester City’s recent verdict, Dyche recalled Everton being “hammered” by their punishment and remembered Evertonians asking why their club was having to answer for financial breaches while City’s case remained unresolved. The Times
Dyche was in charge when Everton initially received a 10-point deduction in November 2023, describing the punishment at the time as “disproportionate”. That sanction was subsequently reduced to six points on appeal, before Everton received another two-point deduction later in the season. BBC
Whatever Evertonians thought of Dyche’s football by the end, he experienced one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s recent history from inside the dugout.
More than two years later, it appears he hasn’t forgotten either the criticism that comes with management or the financial battle Everton were fighting while he was there.
