Manchester City's Rayan Ait-Nouri Told to Issue Public Apology Before Algeria Consider Recall

Manchester City left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri must apologise in public to the Algeria coaching staff and supporters before the National Team will welcome him back, according to new reports.

Rayan Ait-Nouri was axed from Algeria's international break squad after a public fit over a selection decision.

It has been an international break fraught with off-the-pitch drama for Manchester City players, primarily in the wake of the guilty verdict issued over the Premier League’s financial charges. For one player, though, there are problems of a far more personal nature to contend with.

Aït-Nouri, who is currently fighting for club minutes at left-back, has spent the break making headlines far from the Etihad Stadium for all the wrong reasons.

What started as a routine call-up has curdled into a full-blown fallout with his country, which now casts doubt over the 25-year-old’s international future.

The “Non-Negotiable Condition”

Before Aït-Nouri is allowed to wear the Algeria shirt again, he has been handed a demand: a formal public apology, delivered through the media or his own social channels, to the coaching staff and the supporters he is accused of letting down, according to reports from Algeria, as cited by Sport Witness.

The report mentions that the gesture is being treated as a “non-negotiable condition” of any return, intended to repair team morale and make amends for the disruption his conduct is said to have caused. It is a painful position for any player to be in and is a measure of how quickly relations have soured.

What Actually Happened Against Zambia

The flashpoint arrived during Algeria’s meeting with Zambia last Friday. Manager Brahim Hemdani chose to start Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jaouen Hadjam at left-back ahead of the Manchester City recruit, then watched Hadjam open the scoring before the visitors drew level just before the hour.

Hemdani had planned to send Aït-Nouri on at that point, only to reverse the decision once the equaliser landed. When Algeria nudged back in front moments later, the defender is said to have declined to take the field at all.

That refusal did not go down well with his manager. Aït-Nouri’s frustration had reportedly been plain throughout, with teammates and Hemdani trying to calm him on the touchline, and his conduct is said to have angered dressing room and staff alike.

He exited the camp shortly afterwards, the national team confirming his departure, with reports indicating he had himself asked to leave, a request granted only after repeated insistence.

A Player Already on the Margins at City

The media back in Algeria have been quick to lay the blame squarely at his feet, and state that the decision to release him from the camp was rubber-stamped in a meeting that also carried the approval of federation president Walid Sadi.

Another Algerian title described the player as looking withdrawn and sullen before the Zambia game had even kicked off.

The timing is far from ideal for a player still hunting for a foothold in Manchester. Aït-Nouri’s only start of the campaign came in Manchester City's 5-0 Carabao Cup third round victory against Norwich City, where he played the full 90 minutes; beyond that, his involvement has amounted to a single appearance off the bench.

Whether he wins back his place in the Algeria squad may now rest on how willing he is to apologise in public. A drawn-out standoff with his country is hardly what a defender still fighting for minutes under Enzo Maresca needed.
