Five years ago today, I had one of those Liverpool days that stays with you.
It wasn’t just about the football.
It was my daughter’s birthday, and instead of simply celebrating at home, we decided to make a proper trip of it.
We travelled down to Liverpool, had lunch at a hotel near Anfield, watched Liverpool beat Rangers 2-0 in the Champions League and then headed into the city for a great night out.
Looking back now, it was one of those trips where everything just seemed to come together.
And there was an added bonus before we’d even got to Anfield.
We met Bruce Grobbelaar.
Now that’s not a bad way to start a Liverpool birthday weekend.
Lunch before the game
We had arranged lunch at a hotel near Anfield before the match.
It was already exciting enough knowing that we’d be heading to Anfield later that evening, but meeting Bruce Grobbelaar made the whole thing even more special.
For somebody who grew up watching Liverpool, seeing one of the club’s great goalkeepers in person is something you don’t forget.
Grobbelaar was part of the great Liverpool teams of the 1980s, winning the European Cup and numerous domestic trophies.
So there we were, celebrating my daughter’s birthday and getting ready for a Champions League night at Anfield — and we’d bumped into a genuine Liverpool legend.
You couldn’t really ask for much more.
Then it was off to Anfield
The match itself was on October 4, 2022.
Liverpool were playing Rangers in the Champions League group stage, and Anfield was absolutely bouncing.
I still remember the feeling of heading towards the stadium.
There is something about going to Anfield for a night game that is difficult to explain to somebody who hasn’t experienced it.
The lights.
The noise.
The anticipation.
And then that feeling when you walk into the stadium and see the pitch.
Even after all the times I’ve been to Liverpool, I still get that feeling.
This time was particularly special because I wasn’t just going to watch Liverpool.
I was there celebrating my daughter’s birthday.
That’s what made the whole trip different.
And Liverpool got the job done
Liverpool won 2-0.
Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring after just seven minutes with that brilliant free-kick, before Mohamed Salah converted a second-half penalty to seal the victory.
It wasn’t one of those crazy Anfield nights where we saw six or seven goals.
But honestly?
I didn’t care.
We’d travelled down together.
We’d had a great lunch.
We’d met Bruce Grobbelaar.
We’d watched Liverpool win a Champions League game at Anfield.
And we were celebrating my daughter’s birthday.
It was a terrific night.
Sometimes the memories aren’t necessarily about the biggest wins.
They’re about who you were with and what the whole day meant.
Then came the night out
And we weren’t going straight back to the hotel after the final whistle.
We headed into Liverpool and had a great night out in the city.
That’s another thing I love about going to Liverpool for a match.
You don’t have to rush home.
You can actually make an occasion of it.
We could relax, enjoy ourselves and talk about the game we’d just watched.
There was no pressure to get back into the car and drive home that night.
We were staying over and travelling home the following day.
It felt like a proper little break rather than simply going to a football match.
And that’s exactly what we wanted.
There is just one thing I regret
Looking back now, there is one thing that makes me laugh.
I wish we’d went to Ibrox the following week.
Because five years ago today Liverpool beat Rangers 2-0 at Anfield.
And exactly a week later?
Liverpool went to Ibrox and absolutely destroyed Rangers 7-1.
I mean…
Typical.
We picked the 2-0 win.
Then Liverpool went to Glasgow the following week and scored seven.
The Reds actually fell behind to Scott Arfield that night before Roberto Firmino scored twice, Darwin Núñez added another and Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score an incredible six-minute hat-trick. Harvey Elliott completed the scoring.
Imagine if we’d decided to make it two trips.
We could have had the 2-0 at Anfield and the 7-1 at Ibrox.
Although I’m not sure my daughter would have appreciated another trip so soon!
But I wouldn’t change that weekend
The funny thing is, when you look back at football results, it’s easy to concentrate on the scoreline.
Liverpool winning 2-0 isn’t going to go down as one of the greatest victories in the club’s history.
But that’s not why I remember it.
I remember travelling down with my daughter for her birthday.
I remember having lunch near Anfield.
I remember meeting Bruce Grobbelaar.
I remember walking towards Anfield knowing we were going to watch Liverpool in the Champions League.
I remember the atmosphere inside the stadium.
I remember Trent’s free-kick.
I remember Salah scoring the penalty.
And I remember heading into Liverpool afterwards and having a great night out together.
Those are the things that stick with you.
Five years on, I’m really glad we did it
Five years can go incredibly quickly.
One minute you’re planning a birthday trip and the next you’re looking back wondering where all that time went.
But I’m really glad we decided to make that trip.
Football gives you so many memories, but some of the best ones have very little to do with the actual result.
They come from the people you’re with.
That trip was about Liverpool, but it was also about my daughter.
It was her birthday.
We travelled down together, spent the day together, watched our team together and then enjoyed Liverpool together.
That’s what makes it special.
And yes, I will always have that little thought in the back of my mind:
Why didn’t we go back the following week for the 7-1?
Because that would have been some story.
But then again, maybe the fact that we weren’t there makes the memory even more enjoyable.
We had our own Liverpool story.
And five years later, I still remember that trip with a massive smile.
Happy birthday to my daughter — and thank you, Liverpool, for giving us a brilliant memory I’ll never forget.
