Premier League giants keeping tabs on Huddersfield Town loan star

Huddersfield Town loanee Matty Young is attracting the attention of Liverpool, as per Alan Nixon via his Patreon.

Huddersfield Town are having an excellent start to the season in League One after a strong summer window. HTAFC brought in nine new players, including Sunderland starlet Matty Young on loan, beating out several of their EFL rivals.

Young has been a regular starter for the Terriers since his arrival, and has attracted some top-level attention. As per Alan Nixon via his Patreon, Liverpool are keeping tabs on Young’s progress.

The Reds see Young as a potential future number one, but would need to make a serious bid to tempt Sunderland into a sale. The Black Cats view Young as Robin Roefs’ long-term successor and tied him down to a new contract over the summer before he joined Huddersfield.

Why Premier League sides will see Matty Young as a future number one

Young is continuing to enhance his reputation at Huddersfield Town, with the Sunderland loanee already attracting reported interest from Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper has started all eight of Huddersfield’s League One matches, conceding seven goals and keeping two clean sheets, while also making his 100th senior appearance in the recent 3-1 win at Burton Albion.

Young spent the previous two seasons as Salford City’s first choice in League Two, keeping 15 clean sheets in 2025/26 and helping them reach the play-off final. His early step up to League One has been encouraging, with FotMob giving him a 6.72 average rating after eight starts, alongside 12 saves from 19 shots and seven high claims.

Sunderland have him contracted until 2030, while his size, distribution and shot-stopping ability have made him one of the EFL’s most closely watched young goalkeepers. No doubt several Premier League outfits will be keeping tabs on this Huddersfield stint.

The Verdict: Matty Young has made the step-up to the League One as expected

As said previously, Young had more than impressed at Salford over the last two years. He already has received multiple call-ups to the England U21 squad, while also being capped for the U19s.

Some Championship sides had taken interest over a loan stint this summer, before Sunderland opted for a League One move. So far he has made the step-up superbly with HTAFC.

Huddersfield Town had a big task ahead of them to replace Lee Nicholls who has moved on to Preston North End. Some will have seen Young as a risk in that regard given his lack of experience above League Two. However, any nerves over the move will have been eased by now.
