Dominik Szoboszlai has received more backing to become Liverpool captain in the future, with club and international teammate Armin Pecsi the latest to throw his weight behind the midfielder.

Andoni Iraola made Szoboszlai one of the Reds’ vice-captains during the summer, and a number of pundits have already tipped him to take over the armband from Virgil van Dijk, who could leave Anfield next when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Among those to have backed the 25-year-old to become the club’s next captain include legendary skipper Steven Gerrard, who Szoboszlai has been continually compared to since making the move to Anfield in 2023.

The Hungarian already captains his country, having been handed the honor at the age of 22, and now his compatriot Pecsi has become the most high-profile member of the Liverpool locker room to back Szoboszlai to eventually become the club’s captain.

“I think it’s a big topic at the moment,” Pecsi said in an interview with Anfield Watch.

“Especially among the fans, and among Hungarian supporters as well. It would be a huge thing. But I think for him the most important is what he does on the pitch and what he represents.

“I think he would be honored and very proud to one day wear the captain’s armband for Liverpool.”

Szoboszlai has already shown his captaincy credentials with Liverpool, having worn the armband during preseason and taken on more responsibilities after being named as one of Van Dijk’s deputies this season, while Pecsi has also revealed the impact he made upon the young goalkeeper’s arrival on Merseyside last year.

“When I was settling fortunately I could always rely on him,” Pecsi said.

“If there was anything on and off the pitch, he would help. The quality that he represents on the pitch you could learn a lot from that. Or even just talking to him about football I can say that I got closer to him and the quality that he represents and when you talk to a player like him you can learn a lot from him about the game.

“But obviously he would also help me with completely mundane things like when training is, where to meet the team or what to wear for the games. So, even with these tiny things I always felt like I could turn to him.

“And obviously on the pitch as well. I could learn so much from him, and talk to him about football and what he sees and what he thinks.

“It helped a lot that I could speak to someone in my own mother tongue, which helped settling in a lot. And after that, it was just good to be able to turn to someone. I felt like I could ask him for anything.”
