Liverpool’s recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on identifying elite young talent before their value and reputation reach their peak, with the club continuing to monitor defenders who could develop into long-term options at the highest level.
That approach has seen the Reds conduct extensive background work on several emerging centre-backs across Europe, with conversations and information-gathering exercises often providing a wider insight into the talent available on the market.
One such process began with Liverpool looking closely at a player who was already attracting significant attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
While that particular pursuit ultimately took a different direction, the work carried out by the Reds would lead them towards another defender who would eventually become a Liverpool player.
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Liverpool’s initial information-gathering exercise centred around Leny Yoro during his time at Lille.
However, the conversations that followed resulted in Jérémy Jacquet emerging as a player of particular interest to the club.
Jacquet was not considered to be at quite the same stage of development as Yoro at the time, but Liverpool’s recruitment team believed he possessed an even higher ceiling than his fellow young centre-back.
That assessment is significant given the level at which Yoro was already regarded.
The Frenchman had established himself as one of the most exciting defensive prospects in European football, eventually making the move to Manchester United in the summer of 2024.
Liverpool’s interest in Jacquet, though, was not simply dependent on what happened with Yoro.
Joyce reports that even if Yoro had ultimately moved to Anfield, Liverpool would likely have continued tracking Jacquet as part of their wider strategy of identifying elite emerging centre-backs.
It highlights the depth of work that goes into Liverpool’s recruitment process, with one potential target opening the door to another player who could eventually become an important figure in the club’s plans.
For Jacquet, Liverpool’s interest reflects the growing belief that he has the potential to develop into a top-level defender.
With the Reds continuing to look towards the next generation, Jacquet is a name that may just be proving that their strategy is working.
