Heading into the 2026/27 season, the feel-good factor had returned to Chelsea. All connected with the club appeared delighted with the appointment of Xabi Alonso and the vast majority of the club’s business in the summer transfer window. All connected with the West London club were understandably disappointed that no new midfielder joined, following the departure of Enzo Fernandez. According to Matt Law, Chelsea are leading the race to sign the England international.
New Midfielder Needed Following Enzo Fernandez Departure
Chelsea Lead the Race for Alex Scott
Chelsea managed to improve much of their squad on paper this summer, but having sold Fernandez to Manchester City, they needed a new midfielder to come in. Towards the end of the transfer window, the Blues almost signed Lamine Camara from Monaco, which fell apart due to Monaco looking to sell another player instead and keep Camara.
Xabi Alonso’s team were often linked with Scott throughout the summer, long before Camara’s name was even mentioned. As revealed by Matt Law, the Stamford Bridge club had more than one bid rejected for the Bournemouth midfielder. Scott recently earned his first start for England in a 7-0 win over Croatia, with Tuchel describing Scott as the “complete package.”
His current club: Bournemouth have remained adamant the 23-year-old will not leave in January, but the fact is, Scott will have one year left on his current deal at the end of the season, and unless he commits his future to the South Coast club, it looks like Alonso’s team will return and test Bournemouth’s resolve. Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur are all thought to be interested.

The Last Word
The progression of Alex Scott has been great to see, and Alonso is clearly crying out for a new midfielder, with the club suffering from injuries and a lack of form from some.
When fit, Moises Caicedo is an automatic selection, but it’s key who they have alongside him. He’s impressive in tight spaces and is very rarely caught in possession. He works hard for his teammates, covering a lot of ground. He’s adept at keeping attacks moving and starting attacks.
What is most impressive about Scott is his all-round ability, making him a perfect partner for Caicedo in midfield. Whether Scott decides to seek pastures new remains to be seen, but Chelsea are leading the race for the talented 23-year-old.
