Newcastle United were once again battling relegation and optimism was at an all time low when they prepared to face a title-challenging Manchester City team which were unbeaten against the Magpies in their last 22 games; the longest run in Premier League history at the time. This feeling only grew worse in the opening 24 seconds when Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for the visitors. A defiant Newcastle backline fought hard to stop the scoreline being increased, and after a Salomon Rondon equaliser in the second half, the Magpies snatched a late victory through a crucial Matt Richie penalty.
On September 29, Manchester City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought to them by the Premier League for breaching financial rules over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. It was a period in which City won three Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup and the Community Shield.
It has been estimated that City’s success in breaching the rules has cost rival clubs more than £500 million in lost prize money. 38 clubs were ultimately victims of City’s rule-breaching when it comes to lost prize money in the Premier League.

The charges against Man City are subject to appeal, which, if successful, could see them avoid significant punishment.
But if the charges are upheld, City’s potential punishment is likely to be severe given the unprecedented extent of the charges. Significant fines, the stripping of titles and relegation has all been discussed and speculated.
Compensation payments to clubs are a punishment that could directly impact Newcastle.
Newcastle competed in all but one of the seasons related to Manchester City’s charges, finishing below them every time. As such, it could be argued that the Magpies lost significant revenue through merit payments by finishing below a side found guilty of breaking the rules.

It has been calculated that the Magpies lost out on around £27million in prize money revenue due to consistently finishing below Manchester City during the aforementioned period. Everton, who competed in every season related to the charges and finished below City on each occasion, would be due the most in compensation at around £29million.
Manchester United, West Ham United and Crystal Palace complete the top five of clubs who missed out on the most prize money.
But many more clubs could claim to be due compensation having finished below Manchester City, with 38 clubs impacted in total. The lowest calculated compensation payments are around £750,000 due to Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.
Bolton dropped as low as League Two following relegation from the Premier League in 2012. Blackburn have also not returned to the top flight since being relegated the same season.
The total potential compensation due to clubs is estimated to be worth around £528million. As things stand, no punishment for Manchester City has been decided.
