Jeremy Jacquet has been full of praise for his Liverpool centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk, following the early weeks of the pair playing alongside each other for the Reds.

‌

It comes as the French defender has made quite the impression during the first few games of the season, having had to fill the boots of fellow countryman Ibrahima Konate upon his arrival. So far, Jacquet has looked calm and composed at the back, despite being just 21 years old, taking the Premier League and Champions League in his stride.

There is certainly some hope that the youngster can be the long-term successor to Van Dijk in the backline, as the experienced star is now in the twilight years of his career, but for the meantime the pair will be looking to work in tandem to get Liverpool competing at the very top once again.

With the first international break offering a chance for some reflection on his start to life at Liverpool, Jacquet was asked by French outlet Telefoot about his thoughts on playing alongside Van Dijk.

"Everything is going well at the moment," he reflected when asked about how his time at Anfield has managed to go so far, following his transfer switch from Rennes.

"Playing alongside Van Dijk is really special when you know what a defender he is," Jacquet continued. "Very few defenders have reached his level."

It underlines just how much respect Jacquet has for his new partner at the back, with the pair already working well together in the early weeks of the season.

It remains to be seen just how long that partnership will last, with Van Dijk's contract set to expire when the season ends, but for now the Reds will be hoping that the duo can help the team rise the ranks with a mixture of the past and present along with the future.

The centre-back area will be a place of interest for the coming months, even with Jacquet and Van Dijk impressing together, due to the impending return of Giovanni Leoni, another youngster who is looking to make his mark.

The Italian star suffered a cruel knee injury last season that he is only now coming back from, with some hope that his involvement in the team will set Andoni Iraola up for the future.

There is also room for Ronald Araujo and Joe Gomez to thrive, though both are doubts for the long-term, with the former having his loan deal run until the summer, while the latter also has a contract expiring at the end of the season.

It sets up an interesting and transitional period in the backline for the Reds, with some stability needed over the coming months and years.
