Every player linked with Liverpool since the summer window shut - and the chances they'll sign…

A look at the players Liverpool are reportedly tracking ahead of the January transfer window - and the chances that they sign them.

While Liverpool haven’t necessarily enjoyed the perfect start to life under new head coach Andoni Iraola – being six points adrift of the league leaders after just five games isn’t ideal – they remain undefeated and seem to making strides in the right direction. That doesn’t mean that they’ll be idle in the January transfer window, however.

There are still question marks hovering over several positions in the squad. Right-back remains a potential issue, there’s a sense that further attacking reinforcements may be required, and Liverpool also appear to be in the market for a new central midfielder after the departure of Curtis Jones. Some of those headaches may be remedied over the winter.

Below, we’ve looked at the players Liverpool have been linked with since the summer transfer window closed, and given each prospective deal a rating out of 10 based on the likelihood that it might happen.

Lamine Camara

Camara was meant to be a Chelsea player by now, but a deal with Monaco fell through at the very last moment on deadline day – a situation which has reportedly put the Blues off of a second bid in January, even though their own need for a midfielder is perhaps more urgent than Liverpool’s.

Iraola does seem to have his heart set on adding some reinforcements in the centre of the park at some point, however. With Jones gone and Alexis Mac Allister’s future still up in the air, it’s a position in which a fresh pair of legs might become a crucial long-term investment. A huge number of players have been linked with a move to Anfield and while going through the full list would make this a very lengthy article indeed, Camara appears to be close to the top of the list.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has reported since the summer window shut that Liverpool are interested in Camara, a box-to-box midfielder who ticks a lot of the boxes Iraola wants ticking. Monaco, for their part, are desperate for cash after the sales of both Camara and forward Folarin Balogun fell through – the latter’s move to Everton also collapsed at the eleventh hour – and will almost certainly sanction a move in January if Liverpool are willing to pay up.

Tyler Morton

Another interesting story which has cropped up since the summer suggests that Liverpool could bid to bring former academy prospect Morton back to the club, 18 months after he left for Lyon.

When he left Anfield, Morton was widely perceived as lacking the physicality required for the Premier League, but he seems to have toughened up and become far more press-resistant and stronger in one-on-one situations in France, and that’s allowed him to make better use of his impressive passing range.

Liverpool have a sell-on clause embedded in the deal which sent Morton to Lyon in the first place, which gives them a clear edge over any potential competition if a bidding war does break out. Lyon are also still in a horrible financial position with reported debts of over €500m (£430m), so they’re very much a selling club for the foreseeable future. The sourcing for the stories suggesting that Liverpool are keen on striking a deal isn’t that strong, however, so this could easily just be paper talk.

Likelihood rating: 5/10

Jules Koundé

The France and Barcelona defender has been linked with Liverpool dozens of times over the past couple of years, which usually means that there is either genuine long-term interest in the player should the conditions become ripe for a deal, or that the gossip columns are going back to old staples to fill things out during the quiet months.

Football365 claim that Liverpool are readying a bid worth around £64m and that Koundé is ready to move, but we’d like to hear it from a more reputable source before we swallow the story whole.

Caveats and scepticism aside, Liverpool do have worries about their defensive depth, even if the additions of Jérémy Jacquet and Ronald Araújo has helped to paper over the cracks quite effectively thus far. If Liverpool’s best defenders stay healthy, then we doubt that they’ll go too hard in the winter transfer window, but if concerns over form and fitness of the back-ups grows, then this is at least a plausible story given that Barcelona are once again looking to make some sales to fund future purchases of their own.

Likelihood rating: 6/10

Yankuba Minteh

Liverpool are definitely interested in Minteh and had a reported £60m bid rejected back in August, and sources suggest that they remain keen to get their hands on the Gambian winger if they can in the future.

The problem is the price. Brighton & Hove Albion appear to want a bare minimum of £80m, and the Reds aren’t willing to go that far. An injury which has sidelined him for the first chunk of the new season hasn’t helped matters, either, and as it stands a January deal seems relatively unlikely.

That could change if Cody Gakpo leaves, as some speculation still suggests he might, but it’s more likely that Liverpool revisit the idea of buying Minteh next summer, when he will have just two years left on his contract, which could leave Brighton a little more open to a sale. For now, however, we suspect that he’ll stay put over the winter unless something significant happens. Brentford’s Kevin Schade is another outside bet.

Likelihood rating: 3/10
