Officiating is a hard job in the NFL. The speed of the game is lightning-fast, while many of the rules require subjective, judgment-based calls in the moment, all under the beaming scrutiny of an on-watching nation.

But NFL referees do not help themselves, and fans sympathized with Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson after he was screamed at by an official for an accidental collision.

In the first half of the Vikings’ clash with the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium, Wilson rushed toward Malik Willis but was blocked by running back Ollie Gordon II. The play was called dead, but neither Wilson nor the blocking Gordon appeared to hear the whistle.

Even if they did, the physical nature of football meant the two players were tangled up, leading Wilson to collide with head official Adrian Hill. Wilson was pushed into Hill by Gordon, and the official tumbled to the ground as a result.

Wilson went to help Hill off the turf, but the official was furious. He angrily stormed to his feet and vehemently directed Wilson to get back to his side of the field.

Officials don't usually get angry with players, so this moment stood out as it was Hill who was the frustrated figure in the exchange. It's unclear what Hill thought happened on the play, but the referee ultimately didn't appreciate getting knocked to the ground by players clashing after the whistle sounded.

Naturally, fans were dumbfounded by Hill’s reaction to getting knocked over. One user posted: “Ref’s got zero chill after getting helped up? Wild.”

“Officials have a hard job, but their arrogance and opinions of themselves just make them so unlikable,” another wrote. Many others highlighted how it was “not a good look” for the ref, while another posted: “This is actually insane... refs are so easily unlikable I fear.”

One more felt Hill’s behavior was a disappointing reflection of the attitude of referees across the league: “More evidence we need to start hold referees accountable. It’s not just for blatantly obvious missed or outright bad calls that potentially alter the outcome of games, it’s also for complete a--holery like this.

“A god portion [sic], not all, but a good portion of these refs think they’re god and are untouchable. 55 got blocked into him what the hell does the ref want him to do???? Hey ref you saw them coming toward you, why not exercise some brain power and get the f--- out of the way??????”

Another simply added: “What an a-hole, he was trying to help him up.”

The Vikings entered the clash with the winless Dolphins at 3-0 despite offensive struggles, thanks to their defense. Wilson entered the game with 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a pass deflection on the season.
