Chiefs stave off Raiders, continue unbeaten start

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (WIBW) - It took a comeback in the final five minutes, but the Kansas City Chiefs are 4-0 for the ninth time in franchise history after a 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Las Vegas struck first on an Ian Thomas touchdown catch in the first quarter, but the Chiefs answered on their next drive to tie it at 7 on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Tyquan Thornton.

The teams traded field goals in the second quarter, but the Raiders hit their second of the period as time expired to take a 13-10 lead into halftime.

It remained 13-10 until the fourth quarter, when Thornton followed a 76-yard run from Kenneth Walker with his second touchdown of the day, this time on an 8-yard pass from Mahomes.

The Raiders answered with field goals on consecutive drives to take a 19-17 lead late in the fourth quarter, setting up a game-winning touchdown drive for Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Mahomes found Thornton for a 55-yard gain with 3:25 remaining, setting Kansas City up in the red zone and bringing the veteran receiver to 111 yards on five catches. Thornton was injured on his final catch and was carted off the field.

The Chiefs took the lead for good with 3:21 remaining on a Walker touchdown run. He finished with 177 all-purpose yards on 20 touches.

Kansas City sealed the win by recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Walker scored on consecutive touches late in the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs some cushion.

The Raiders had the ball with a chance to tie or win in the final seconds, but Xavier Nwankpa picked off Kirk Cousins on Vegas’ final offensive play, giving Kansas City a 30-27 win.

The Chiefs enter their bye week following the win. Kansas City returns to action Sunday, Oct. 18, when they host the Los Angeles Chargers.
