Young signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light until 2030 before joining League One Huddersfield on a season-long loan during the summer. The England youth international has started all eight of Huddersfield’s League One fixtures so far this season, conceding seven goals and keeping two clean sheets. He also recently made his 100th senior appearance during the Terriers’ 3-1 victory over Burton Albion.

Young has built up significant senior experience despite his age. He initially spent time with Darlington before establishing himself as Salford City’s first-choice goalkeeper across two loan spells. He made 77 appearances for Salford and kept 15 clean sheets last season as the club reached the League Two play-off final.

Sunderland continue to have high hopes for Young and view his current spell at Huddersfield as the next stage of his development. Robin Roefs remains the Black Cats’ established first-choice goalkeeper, but Young is regarded as a possible long-term successor. Liverpool’s reported interest provides further evidence of the teenager’s growing reputation, although his lengthy Sunderland contract leaves the club in a strong negotiating position should interest develop further.
