The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a 30-27 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon to remain unbeaten, but they lost a key player to a gruesome injury.

Late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a very visible ankle injury that certainly didn’t look good. And after initial testing, Chiefs coach Andy Reid was saying the same thing.

Thornton Suffers Injury

Late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, Thornton hauled in a 55-yard catch from Patrick Mahomes to set the Chiefs up deep in Raiders territory as they looked to take the lead in the game.

Thornton immediately got up to celebrate the big catch, but he quickly fell to the ground when he realized that he had suffered a major injury and his ankle was turned in the wrong direction.

After the game, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle that was “put back into place.”

“Thornton will have a full evaluation in the morning, along with a second opinion. Out indefinitely, but in good spirits,” Rapoport wrote in a post on X.

‘That doesn’t look good’

After the game, Reid offered his thoughts on the injury as he gave a bit of an update on his player.

“That doesn’t look good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, via Jared Sapp of SBNation. “He’s going to fly back with us, and we’ll get further evaluation later.”

“That’s a rough one,” Reid said. “Especially a guy like Tyquan [who is] a great father, a great husband and all that. Just his attitude. His attitude is unbelievable. He’s great for the team and kind of a leader for that group. For that to happen, especially with the year he’s having — he’s had a phenomenal year to this point — and on a great play on top of that, it’s a tough one to see for all the guys.”

Given the gruesome nature of his injury, it seems like he will likely be sidelined for an extended period of time.
