Man City pass 500 caps under Abu Dhabi owners but Man Utd still most-capped Prem club

The England badge with an overlay of the ranking of Premier League clubs by caps.

Man Utd remain the most-capped club

Man City players have won more than 500 caps since the period covering the 114 charges began, but Man Utd still lead the way for England appearances…

Almost 65 per cent of City’s England caps have been won since the Abu Dhabi takeover. Should they be stripped too?

Here are the Premier League sides ranked on how many England caps they have. Only caps earned while on the books at a club count towards the total…

1) Manchester United – 1424 caps Players capped – 71

Most capped: Sir Bobby Charlton (106)

United have plenty of players with bundles of caps but their contribution to the Three Lions has certainly waned. In the five years since the Euro 2020 final (in 2021), Kobbie Mainoo is their only new England cap. And he can barely get a look-in these days.

2) Liverpool – 1212 caps Players capped – 76

Most capped: Steven Gerrard (114)

Only two Liverpool players (Curtis Jones and Rio Ngumoha) capped since Trent Alexander-Arnold’s debut in 2018.

3) Tottenham – 1067 caps Players capped – 80

Most capped: Harry Kane (84)

Spurs are some way off United and Liverpool but no club has packed more players off for England duty.

4) Arsenal – 1012 caps Players capped – 71

Most capped: Kenny Sansom (77)

Bukayo Saka, on 59 caps, looks well-placed in the future to become England’s most capped Gunner. Saka has Tony Adams (66) and David Seaman (72) to get past first before he worries about Sansom’s benchmark.

5) Manchester City – 811 caps Players capped – 57

Most capped: John Stones (80)

Elliot Anderson became City’s 18th capped player since since the Abu Dhabi takeover, with 523 caps won for City under the current ownership.

6) Chelsea – 745 caps Players capped – 59

Most capped: Frank Lampard (104)

Lampard’s record looks safe given no player is ever likely to stay at Chelsea long enough these days to get close to a century of England caps as a Blue.

7) Everton – 631 caps Players capped – 72

Most capped: Jordan Pickford (92)

Pickford was the first Toffee to hit 50 caps and seems certain to push on to become the second keeper to get a century.

8) Aston Villa – 514 caps Players capped – 79

Most capped: Gareth Southgate (42)

Plenty of England internationals in Villa’s history – only Spurs have offered more – but 62 of them never reached double figures for caps.

9) Leeds United – 345 caps Players capped – 35

Most capped: Jack Charlton (35)

Leeds went 17 years without an England cap between Paul Robinson and Kalvin Phillips, and five years before Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

10) Newcastle – 342 caps Players capped – 44

Most capped: Alan Shearer (35)

Anthony Gordon cracked the top five for most England caps as a Magpie, behind Beardsley, Batty, Dyer and Shearer.

11) Nottingham Forest – 305 caps Players capped – 38 Most capped: Stuart Pearce (76)

Morgan Gibbs-White became the first Forest player to represent England since Pearce – a gap of 27 years.

12) Ipswich Town – 156 caps

Players capped – 12

Most capped: Terry Butcher (45)

Ed Sheeran’s oddly-regular appearances at England camps don’t count, leaving Richard Wright as the last Tractor Boy to play for England in 2000.

13) Fulham – 110 caps Players capped – 12

Most capped: Johnny Haynes (56)

No Fulham caps since Bobby Zamora in 2011. Surprising, that, for reasons we’re not entirely sure of.

14) Sunderland – 101 caps Players capped – 29

Most capped: Dave Watson (14)

Plenty of Black Cats on parade for England but since the war, only Watson managed double figures.

15) Crystal Palace – 99 caps Players capped – 21

Most capped: Marc Guehi (26)

Guehi was the first Eagle to hit double figures for caps before Eberechi Eze followed. With Dean Henderson and Adam Wharton, you might think Palace should be leapfrogging Sunderland sharpish, but Tuchel seems to have other ideas.

16) Brighton – 13 caps Players capped – 5

Most capped: Lewis Dunk (6)

Lewis Dunk became the first Seagull to play for England in 36 years since Steve Foster.

17) Brentford – 15 caps Players capped – 4

Most capped: Jordan Henderson (7)

Ivan Toney was the first Bee to play for England in the post-war period, with almost 84 years between his debut and Leslie Smiths single cap in 1939.

18) Coventry City – 11 caps

Players capped – 4

Most capped: Reg Matthews (5)

Just over 28 years now since Dion Dublin was the last Sky Blue to line up for the Three Lions.

19) Bournemouth – 7 caps Players capped – 3 Most capped: Callum Wilson (4)

Alex Scott finally completed the hat-trick for Bournemouth. The question now is how many caps can he gather for the Cherries before they sell the midfielder for massive money?

20) Hull City – 0 caps

No Hull player has ever won an England cap while representing the Tigers.
