Sean Payton had watched the Denver Broncos survive uneven offensive stretches during the opening weeks of the season, but Sunday brought a different result. Denver spent most of the afternoon chasing San Francisco without finding the consistency needed to complete another comeback.

The defeat dropped the Broncos back to .500 and placed more attention on an arrangement Payton introduced before the season. With Denver struggling to start games and sustain drives, the questions surrounding its offense have become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Sean Payton Addresses Davis Webb’s Play-Calling Role

Payton was asked after Denver’s 24-14 loss whether he was considering changing the play-calling situation with offensive coordinator Davis Webb.

“It’s too early to… it’s a fair question. I appreciate it. And, man, it’s tough to discuss any of that right now,” Payton said.

The Broncos coach did not announce a change or directly criticize Webb. However, he also stopped short of guaranteeing that the current arrangement would remain untouched as Denver prepares for Week 5.

“To your original question, each game we look at everything and that’s kind of how we’ll approach this one,” Payton said.

Webb remains Denver’s primary offensive play caller. Payton continues to help build the game plan and remains involved with the offense, but he has not called the plays through the Broncos’ first four games.

Broncos’ Slow Starts Put Pressure on Davis Webb

Denver’s latest performance made the question understandable. The Broncos produced only six points during the first 55 minutes against San Francisco before a late touchdown cut the deficit to three.

The 49ers responded with a touchdown of their own and closed out the 24-14 victory. Denver fell to 2-2 after entering the matchup on a two-game winning streak.

The problems extend beyond one loss. The Broncos have scored only 13 first-half points through four games, repeatedly forcing the offense to operate from behind after halftime.

“We’ve had some opportunities, but there are a handful of things that aren’t clicking,” Payton said. “And we gotta figure it out fast, because we’re going into Week 5.”

Webb became Denver’s offensive coordinator in February after previously working as a quarterbacks coach and pass-game coordinator. This is his first season as an NFL coordinator and primary play caller.

Payton handed Webb the responsibility because he believed the move would help the Broncos win. But the offense’s early production has made that decision part of the conversation again.

Payton is not ready to make a public change after four games. If Denver’s slow starts continue, though, the question he called fair will only become more difficult to answer.
