Super Bowl champion Jason McCourty has admitted he underestimated Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs after watching the quarterback quickly regain his form. While Mahomes has not yet reached the extraordinary level he displayed during his record-setting 2018 season, his early performances have been enough to make McCourty reconsider his doubts.

Mahomes has looked increasingly comfortable since returning to action, showing the mobility and improvisational ability that have made him one of the NFL’s most dangerous quarterbacks. His willingness to operate outside the pocket has added another dimension to Kansas City’s offense, allowing him to create plays while throwing on the move or scrambling when opportunities develop.

That mobility has become particularly important as the Chiefs continue finding different ways to attack defenses. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional dropbacks, Kansas City has allowed Mahomes to move around and make quick decisions, putting pressure on opposing defenses that must account for both his arm and his ability to extend plays with his legs.

Kenneth Walker III has also played an important role in making the offense more difficult to defend. His production gives the Chiefs a strong rushing threat, creating the potential for a balanced attack in which Kansas City can run directly at defenses, use play-action to create opportunities downfield or spread the field and allow Mahomes to distribute the ball quickly.

McCourty shared his thoughts about Kansas City’s impressive start this season. This can be seen in a video posted by ESPN.

“All right, now let’s give some love to Mahomes, because, Jordan, to your point, I don’t think it’s been the 2018 version of Mahomes yet, the guy who threw for 50 touchdowns at that level,” McCourty said. “But it shouldn’t be. He just got back. I’ve been so impressed with how much Eric Bieniemy has moved him outside of the pocket. He’s throwing on the run, he’s scrambling, and he’s moving around. He has been unbelievable.”

“I feel like an idiot for doubting this football team with him back on the field because, as well as Kenneth Walker has played, they almost have a two-headed monster on the offensive side of the ball. They get big and run at you, go play-action and take shots, or they spread you out and Patrick Mahomes gets the ball out of his hands quickly. It has been so impressive to see him come back this fast and look this good so early on.”

The combination has helped the Chiefs make an impressive start while giving Mahomes the freedom to play to his strengths. His ability to change the point of attack, escape pressure and deliver accurate passes on the move has made his return look smoother than some expected, reinforcing why Kansas City remains capable of challenging defenses in multiple ways.

For McCourty, Mahomes’ rapid return to form has made his earlier skepticism look premature. The quarterback may not have reached his 2018 peak, but his early impact, combined with Walker’s rushing presence and the Chiefs’ offensive versatility, has provided plenty of reason to believe Kansas City can continue building momentum.
