Week 4 of the 2026 NFL season was rife with controversies - and it wasn't about the players

The weekend was lush with controversy as NFL referees took center stage in Week 4 with a myriad of bizarre incidents on Sunday, including one involving Trey McBride

Sunday, October 4, saw its fair share of NFL controversies and bizarre on-field moments, and the most surprising (or perhaps not) part was that they all involved a group of individuals who are usually meant to stay invisible during gameplay — the referees.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs all improved to 4-0 records, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers all remain winless.

As Week 4 of the NFL season features more gaffes from the refs than usual, here’s taking a closer look at exactly what went down in three separate incidents involving NFL referees.

Patriots' head coach goes on rant

Although the Patriots secured a 29-26 victory over the Bills and went back to their winning ways, the game didn't come without a bit of stress. Vrabel launched a verbal rant directed at one of the referees during Sunday's game, earning himself a swift unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty from the last spot of the ball. Lead referee Vinovich shared with ESPN’s Mike Reiss during the pool report exactly why Vrabel was penalized.

'A f— terrible call'

Vinovich shared: " He [ Vrabel] was out of the box, came up to the official and said, 'That was a f— terrible call.'" After the match, Vrabel fired back during the post-game press conference: " I told him it was a terrible f — call. I’ve said that 87 times since I’ve been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You’d have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive." Vrabel added: " I can tell you in my history of being on the sidelines as a head coach, I’ve said that. And I apologized to him. Again, the players responded. It was unfortunate and I have to be better in those moments.” (Image:AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

Tables turned during Cardinals vs. Giants

On the flipside, the tables turned during the Arizona Cardinals vs. New York Giants game, as this time, it was a referee allegedly swearing at a player. An official was seen swearing at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, as he attracted the ire of the NFLPA. This came as the Cardinals suffered an agonizing 36-24 loss to the Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. (Image:Bryan Smith/ZUMA Press Wire/Shutterstock)

Jeff Seeman loses his cool

As the incident unfolded, Seeman appeared to yell: "F — you" — not once, but twice, at the tight end. McBride could be seen swiftly pointing directly at the CBS camera that was located right next to him and smiling, to highlight the official's on-camera expletive-laden outburst. As per league spokesperson Brian McCarthy, the NFL is said to be actively investigating the circumstances of Seeman swearing at McBride. (Image:screen grab)
