Former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte says he would only manage another Premier League club if he is given assurances about their “ambition” before taking the job.

Man Utd have been mentioned as a potential destination in the Italian media, but speaking to The Athletic, Conte said he would need a sizeable transfer budget to get any English team back to the top of the table:

“In England today they’re using bazookas, while everywhere else they’re still using a pistol. But we also need to be careful about how the money is spent.

“That’s why we were talking earlier about making the right assessments, about having a vision, because you may well have the money, but you have to spend it wisely.”

“If you go to a club where the history speaks for itself – a history made up of trophies, league titles and victories – you can only honour that history in one way.”

“By having the ambition to bring that club back – if it isn’t there today – to fight for those goals. I know full well that only one team can win every year.”

Man Utd were the 11th-highest spenders last summer

Approximately £160m was spent on new additions during the 2026 summer window, which means that the Red Devils didn’t even reach the top 10 teams for expenditure.

Even newly promoted clubs such as Ipswich Town and Hull City ended up splashing out more on transfer fees than Michael Carrick’s side.

United take on Spurs this weekend, and Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith has exclusively told Man U News that Carrick’s position will come under threat if his team loses at Old Trafford.
