Arsenal have had some world-class players over the years but like every other team in the land, fans can often be drawn to those who go a touch under-appreciated.

While the likes of Thierry Henry, Tony Adams and Dennis Bergkamp are rightly lauded by the Gunners fans, there are others who have contributed heavily without the headlines. Through the Premier League years, Arsenal have had a number of these players through different managerial eras.

Right now, the current underrated players in the squad are people like Mikel Merino or Riccardo Calafiori, players who simply go about their business but still contribute massively.

But when it comes to who is the most underrated of all-time in the Premier League era, that’s a whole different story.

For Arsenal fans, choosing just one underrated star is a hard task. But over on our TalkingPoints Live fan page, we put the question to Gunners fans all over. And the responses yielded some big shouts.

One of the first big calls came for current Sunderland skipper Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka I’d say… for so so long he was labelled rubbish. I always thought he had quality & we saw that when the team was more stable under Arteta towards the end. So unlucky not to be a title winning captain. Also a special mention to Eduardo, he was absolutely brilliant before that awful leg break. He got 19 goal involvements in 26 starts for Arsenal 😳🪄

Xhaka got a couple of mentions in the replies in fairness, although a few other midfielders were also given the nod by some fans.

“Always felt Santi Cazorla was really underrated. That Achilles injury he got was brutal” one fan suggested, while another went even bolder, adding:

“Don’t know why but one of the first names that came to mind for me was Tomas Rosicky.”

Of course, Arsenal have had some fine defenders over the years too, with part of Arsenal’s legendary back four of the 1990s, Nigel Winterburn, getting a mention from one fan.

“Nigel was always underrated. Great team player. Part of that formidable defence.”

While fast forwarding to the more modern era, Cameroon international Lauren – part of The Invincibles – was also brought up.

Speaking of Lauren, another fan mentioned him, but also threw in another Invincible, Gilberto Silva, into the mix.

“Lauren was massively underrated and a key part of the best team. Both Winterburn and Dixon were solid players too. Gilberto Silva probably doesn’t get the praise either because of the quality around him but he was immense.”

Clearly, there are so many players to choose from that there’s no obvious winner in this debate. Others to get a mention were Olivier Giroud, Robert Pires, and even Theo Walcott.
