‘It means everything’ – Matty Young’s telling Sunderland admission amid Liverpool transfer…

Matty Young has previously made his Sunderland feelings clear amid fresh reports of interest from Liverpool

Matty Young’s own words offer an intriguing backdrop to reported transfer interest from Liverpool, with the goalkeeper having made no secret of how much playing for Sunderland means to him.

The 19-year-old is reportedly being monitored by Liverpool following an impressive start to his season-long loan spell with Huddersfield Town, with the Premier League champions said to view him as a potential future number one. Young, though, only signed a new Sunderland contract until 2030 earlier this year, and his comments at the time underlined the emotional pull of eventually establishing himself at the Stadium of Light.

“I am over the moon to sign this contract,” Young said. “It proves the last two years out on loan have been worth it. I am proud of the achievement, but I am still focused and determined to keep progressing. The loans over the last two years have really helped me grow up and define who I am as a goalkeeper.

“Understanding my strengths, my weaknesses, and what I need to improve on every day. As a Sunderland supporter, being in and around this Club means everything to me. My family are Sunderland through and through, so for them to see me sign this contract is really special.”

Young’s pathway has so far been deliberately built around senior football elsewhere, first with Darlington and Salford City and now Huddersfield. But given his Sunderland roots and long-term contract, the obvious next ambition remains forcing his way into the Black Cats’ first team before any future decision over his longer-term career is made.
