Jeremy Jacquet is relishing playing alongside Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool, with the pair already forging a blossoming partnership at centre-back in the opening weeks of the season.

The Reds remain unbeaten under new head coach Andoni Iraola, and have kept clean sheets in their last three Premier League matches.

Jacquet has earned rave reviews at Anfield since his £55m move from Stade Rennes in the summer, with his form not going unnoticed back in his homeland.

The Frenchman was handed his international debut by Zinedine Zidane during the expanded September/October break, and started back-to-back games as France won 1-0 against Belgium before drawing 0-0 with Italy.

And the 21-year-old is hungry to build on his promising start for both club and country.

"It's pure pleasure. I wasn't expecting so much noise in the stadium,” he told Telefootof his maiden senior international experience with France. “I used to watch the matches on TV, now I'm part of it.

“I'm happy with these first two caps. I've always been a calm player with the ball, and well, here I am, playing my football.

“I don't think about it too much. I only have two caps. I take the opportunities the coach gives me and try to savour them. Because things go by so fast.

"It’s all happening very quickly (at Liverpool) too. We have a good group, so everything is going well. Playing with him (Van Dijk) is fantastic. There are few defenders who have reached his level.

"Years of suffering, I haven't had an easy life. I have had back and knee problems.

“I'm trying to look straight ahead. So now, I'm happy. I play for my nation, my country, and under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane.”
